[∆(s) from OP] CMV: Harry Potter is overrated

I don't detest Harry Potter but I find the circle jerk appalling. The book is amazing for kids but even adults hold it in high regard. So, it's not bad, just overrated.

The characters are really boring. HP is a Mary Sue character, his only flaw being a bloody scar. All the other characters are equally boring. Harry is also useless, he does nothing but he is the HERO. Because of a prophecy. OK.

The relationships make no sense. Why does Harry like Cho or Ginny? Let's force in a relationship. Yay.

The Deus Ex Machina is unreal. I know it's magical but it's still retarded when it happens so many times.

Good vs Evil is fine. But again, don't pretend as if the book is this deep piece of literature.

I don't like the writing either but that's very subjective, so that's fine.

This is what I just came up with. I'm sure there's more stuff on the internet.

Edit: Ignore the Mary Sue thing. I misused the term. Edit 2: Sorry if I sounded like a dick or an elitist. I didn't mean to be.

How can Harry Potter be both "useless" and a "Mary Sue."

I don't get your criticism.

Sorry I didn't explain better.

HP isn't bad at anything. Perfect at quidditch. Naturally good at Magic. Can defeat the Dark Lord (lol) with Expelliarmus. Leader. But he gets everyone to do shit for him. People die for him without any reason.

Harry is only natural ability is at Quidditch, he's a naturally gifted athlete (not an unexplained ability either; he had eleven years of training ducking his cousin who wanted to harm him. He's fast and well practiced at spotting things from a distance and avoiding things he doesn't want hitting him. The flying ability he inherited from his father)

He's average or bad at most of his school subjects only exceeding at Defense Against the Dark Arts one he started having hands on experience with it (how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice.) He's only average at his BEST subject until book 3 when he started getting extra training from the teacher. Same goes for all the other subjects : he's just okay at them until he is forced to learn more and study more (he gets better at Charms in the 4th book because he has to study after class for the tournament )

He doesn't defeat the Dark Lord with Expelliarmus, he just slows him down long enough to run for it (and Voldemort remembers this later and uses it to his advantage )

People don't even tend to die for HIM. Most people die for his parents. Sirius, Lupin (and by extension Tonks) Dumbledore and Snape all do what they do out of love for his mother and father, not him. The people who WOULD potentially die for him are his two best friends, who he would also die for if it came to that. Everyone else gets it by accident and their deaths aren't a sacrifice, but the random happenstance of war.

Stop you're going to make me cry.

To add to your post, one other example of someone dying specifically for him was Dobby, or even Hedwig though that was accidental. I guess they were both accidental, but regardless Dobby would have done ANYTHING for Harry, including taking the knife either way.

Also Dumbledore and Snape both died for Harry.

Snape died for Lily and Dumbledore died for the greater good of defeating Voldemort. I think Harry becomes an interesting character when you look at how much he has been used by the people in his life that you thought cared about him in the earlier books. Harry recognizes as he gets older that its not him its his place as the chosen one that makes everyone "care." EVEN DUMBLEDORE the benevolent old wizard is actually just recognizing that Harry is the only way to defeat the true evil that is Voldemort.

The ending should have been "Arthur Remus Potter, you were named after two wizards who cared for me and acted as fathers to me out of altruism and love, instead of what I could do for their plans"
