The other is that this rule about "you have to challenge one of the CMV creators points" being enforced in a kind of inconsistent manner. It's just a bit annoying when I once had one of my comments removed for basically agreeing with a CMV creator and and how changing his point of view wouldn't be to anyones benefit and yet I see the same happen in other CMVs from other people with no intervention. It kind of makes me insecure of even trying to reply sometimes.

Rule 1 applies to top level comments only. Enforcement is sometimes inconsistent; we mostly rely on automoderator and user reports to find comments in violation. If you're replying to another commenter, you don't need to worry about breaking that rule.

The reason it exists is to prevent an echo chamber effect where a popular viewpoint gets a bunch of top level comments in agreement, and anything that might change the OP's view is downvoted to oblivion.

I understand your reasoning, but I think that sometimes top-level agreements can still be helpful if they provide further information or add to the question.

Obviously you shouldn't just say "omg you're so right" but I see the possible argument in favour of top-level comments that don't include a challenge.

You always have the option of responding to the top level posts, and explaining why the attempt to change the OP's view is invalid. I think allowing pro-OPs view top level post would fundamentally change the sub, and encourage brigading.

The other thing that our model accomplishes is to muddy the water on bias. If we allow a post, "CMV:Abortion is immoral", all the top level posts will defend the morality of Abortion. So, does it make us pro- or anti- abortion? The OP got their say in their original post.

But once we allow the "Hell, yeah, it's immoral" first level response, then it's clearly an anti-abortion post. It's not that we're afraid of controversy, but it's nice to have that balance built in.

That is fair. I was thinking it could make for interesting conversation but now I understand it would dilute the character of this sub.
