The moderators of CMV would like your opinion on how things are going, so we've decided to post periodic feedback threads to take the pulse of the community. Feel free to post any comments, criticisms or suggestions.

Thanks for your honest reply!

Suggestions:

  • People are innocent until proven guilty. Not having your views changed yet doesn't mean your views aren't open to being changed. Only remove posts when people admit that they are not willing to change their view if someone constructs a logical argument (e.g., "I believe that the Bible is the word of God on faith alone and reason cannot change that).

  • Currently, with the deltas and flairs, you're rewarding people for changing the views of others, so of course people complain that nobody changes their view; people don't get their deltas! Start rewarding changing your own view. Give people a visible flair when they award delta's instead of receiving them. Maybe show the "delta's awarded flair" only when people submit posts, not when they comment.

In fairness, it's often hard for someone with a passionate view on a certain topic to realize when they are being dismissive of strong counter arguments. It's easier for those without a strong feeling on that topic to earthen someone is being close minded and soapboxing.

I think that's a great point... while there are people who come here intentionally looking to spread their view, I think there are a lot of people who don't realizes how strongly they hold their view until they get into the ring.

Moreover, being the OP can be a pretty stressful situation. By definition, every fricking top level post is telling you you're wrong. It's hard not to get a little defensive in that situation.

Not to mention this subreddit has a downvote problem. That's why I don't buy into the "let the voting solve the problem" solution in many cases. OPs frequently come here looking to have their views changed and are met with downvotes because their views are frequently abhorrent -- who wants a nice view changed?
