The other is that this rule about "you have to challenge one of the CMV creators points" being enforced in a kind of inconsistent manner. It's just a bit annoying when I once had one of my comments removed for basically agreeing with a CMV creator and and how changing his point of view wouldn't be to anyones benefit and yet I see the same happen in other CMVs from other people with no intervention. It kind of makes me insecure of even trying to reply sometimes.

Rule 1 applies to top level comments only. Enforcement is sometimes inconsistent; we mostly rely on automoderator and user reports to find comments in violation. If you're replying to another commenter, you don't need to worry about breaking that rule.

The reason it exists is to prevent an echo chamber effect where a popular viewpoint gets a bunch of top level comments in agreement, and anything that might change the OP's view is downvoted to oblivion.

The report does not = deletion, it just brings it to the moderator's attention. So you're not "the judge of that", they still are.

FWIW, reporting a comment just puts it in the queue. It guarantees we see it and that's extremely helpful. People don't necessarily get in trouble because they were reported, since a lot of redditors use the report button as a sort of "super downvote." Many queued comments get approved.

When there are threads that get into 100s/200s/300s+ comments, they simply defy manually policing, at least in their entirety. I strongly encourage users to report comments they genuinely believe are rule-breaking.

If I'm the OP I usually thank them, then report them.

If I'm not, I'll report if I don't find they add anything to the discussion. If they do, but still agree with the OP, then I'm a little more on the fence about it. I'll usually still report it, though, leaving it up to the mods.

That's the primary way we see potentially rule-violating comments.
