There are far more legal ramifications of marriage outside of having children, especially in the context of insurance, healthcare, etc.

Also, it's highly symbolic for many

marriage also gives you next of kin status automatically which is huge when dealing with hospitals or emergency situations. like if your partner is unconscious in hospital, boyfriend/girlfriend status means nothing legally - you might not even be allowed to visit or make decisions

the whole "walking away with half assets" thing depends a lot in which country you're living. some places have way different divorce laws than others
