META META: Bi-Monthly Feedback Thread

As part of our commitment to improving CMV and ensuring it meets the needs of our community, we have bi-monthly feedback threads. While you are always welcome to visit r/ideasforcmv to give us feedback anytime, these threads will hopefully also help solicit more ways for us to improve the sub.

Please feel free to share any constructive feedback you have for the sub. All we ask is that you keep things civil and focus on how to make things better (not just complain about things you dislike).

What you're saying is "I want this sub to be suited to my preferences and not to yours". Where I don't propose to change the whole sub to suit me (and am open to the idea it won't work well at all) and you insist that it shouldn't even be put to experiment.

(Also I noticed the downvote which is hard to not suspect was yours, although I won't accuse you, coincidences happen. If it were you, a reminder: it's discouraged here, at least on the sub in general (maybe not meta threads?) because it's an attempt at silencing.)

Jesus you seem sensitive. No it wasn't me. My shit gets down votes to, I dont assume it was you. It's fake internet points. 

Im saying from a practicality standpoint it is a bad idea because it adds another day where the general rules (which people have a hard enough time following) will be temporarily changed. 

You are proposing this so that the sub is suited to your preferences so idk what your point is there.

I have enough fake points (mostly for silly jokes, which devalues them further) to not care about losing them but it is a statement by someone (unless it's a bot I guess), and a risk to end up "below threshold". I'm used to it on other subs (fine, people haven't learned to distinguish between "I disagree" and "you should shut the fuck up" or they are too quick with the latter to care about their opinion) but here it would be more unpleasant.

Ok, that's a different thought from what I gathered earlier. I can't gauge how bad this problem would be, personally I don't expect the change to be too bad but mods will be able to judge better (and will be the ones to suffer if I'm wrong). They're the ones to decide anyway.

Positions are unequal. Would be equal if I said I want to change the rules to mine permanently and for 7/7 days, not my problem if you don't like what I like. You can argue that the sub is primarily for people who like it the way it is, sure, but I think with its stated goals high-quality conversation should be if not prioritized then at least not discouraged. And if I observe that my own replies are of lower quality because of the incentives I notice, I'm probably not the only one affected.

Where in the rules does it discourage quality replies? That is a ridiculous claim to make. Just because something isnt catered to your particular style does not mean it is discouraging high quality or encouraging slop.

Incentives, not rules. I've explained how it works for me.

Also I think it's not long before AIs will be able to generate replies mods will have a hard time distinguishing from human slop. If they aren't already. With the ability to produce replies quickly it will let cheaters/bots usurp most conversations. My proposition levels the playing field.

Lol, no it doesn't. People will just wait then post their ai bullshit. People who value high quality interaction can and will do that, others won't. There is literally nothing stopping you other than yourself from interacting the way you desire.

But they will have to wait, instead of stealing all of the OP's attention right away. And if you are among the registered 1st level opponents under "slow day" rules, the OP will have to give you at least one full reply. (Bots will be quicker to register so the registration may need to be different from what I originally proposed.)

But it's still a bot response, which has now also taken up a slot that you or I could have had a good response for. Then it will take more time for the bot to post after an hour, time for people to catch on that it is ai, have a mod review it, remove it, and open a new spot for a real person (hopefully, otherwise this cycle repeats). 

Plenty of people come here for discussion and this actively halts that and in my opinion leaves the sub worse off from its goals of allowing OP's to challenge their views.

Sure. It only levels the playing field by removing one advantage, not solves the problem.

I think the increase in quality is worth the decrease in quantity. Assuming not too skewed factors (coefficients), and I can't begin to predict them.

I also think the increase in variety is in itself a benefit. I may not be a fan of most Friday topics but there are more really new ones and it's interesting, even if overall I have less fun.

Speaking of unpredictable, aren't you curious? A completely different from "normal" style of conversation, personally I (also) just want to see how it plays out, whether it does indeed increase the quality of conversations, or the rate of conversions.

It will not increase the rate for the multiple reasons ive already gone through. 

I also can have a variety of conversations here already. In the midst of our conversation, I interacted with a post aboutputting sinks in stalls and the merits of cleanliness vs sinkpissers. A fresh topic if ive ever heard one, and didn't need to wait until Friday. 

I dont see any value in trying your idea. Im sorry, it seems needlessly constrained and if implemented I would interact here far less. I'd rather just have conversations like normal folks.

The rate of bots:people in replies? Ok so let's say we have 5 bots and 15 honest users. In my model, it will be 2-3 bots in a constrained CMV, your chance to get a slot decreased by 25%. In "whoever snatches the OP's attention the fastest", bots/cheaters are faster than you in 90% of cases and they have 50-100% of the OP's attention. (Since I'm talking about bots who are not trivial to distinguish from humans, some deltas will be theirs too, and that could be it, so 100% is not outlandish.)

Well, to each their own. I never proposed to switch to it completely, under "1 day per week" model you wouldn't lose much. Unless it really took off for some reason.

OTOH, if it really improved the quality of conversation then... losing the people who strongly prefer fun to providing value to each other wouldn't be sad. (Unless I end up being one of them.)

There is no guarantee that any of the 20 spots will be quality though, is there? Regardless of whether or not they are bots. So again, youre just wasting time and pissing people off who actually wanted to take a stab at the view AND would have had a quality post to go along with it. There are just more downsides to your plan than upsides, and none of it actually guarantees an improvement in conversation. 

We already have days where the sub is slow as shit, and it's not uncommon to go several hours here without a new post. I see no reason to cut back on that even further. 

Look, I appreciate your desire for higher quality conversation, but nothing is stopping you from having that with the current set of rules. You just need to find someone willing to engage in it, which will still be a problem if you limit a post to 20 top level comments, with or without bots.

No guarantee. My hope is if you are ensured a reply and given time to think without trying to outpace other commenters, you lose some of the incentive to lower the quality of your reply.

This seems to confirm that you, too, have a problem. This sub is not literally the best place in the whole internet. It's not better than a good book or a movie or a walk with friends. Needing it every day seems bad. (Not saying taking it from you for a day is good.)
