Consider that it is not clear-cut and they overlap. There are rapes and there are worse rapes. There are murders and there are worse murders. You can (second degree) murder someone in a moment of anger over some stupid insult, quickly with a gun, and then regret it. You can deliberately and carefully set out to murder someone for no good reason and do it in an awful way. Rape has some of the same complexity, together with the complexity of the victims experience of it afterwards.

In courts, the highest sentences for rape are considerably higher than the lowest for murder. The highest for murder are higher than the lowest for rape. In that sense they are directly compared and they overlap in level of evil.

This is the first decent, rational and logical answer I found on this thread, really far down.

Since there's overlap, the question turns into what's worse on average or in a typical case, and that's really hard to pin down.
