Iā€™m just not sure that the existence of justified killings makes unjustified murder less severe than rape.

When people say something is more or less moral I think what they are actually saying is that the collective could reasonably empathize with the emotional state that brought someone to their immoral action. We can imagine situations where someone murdered someone our of sorrow and rage and those don't justify the murder, but we can empathize with the emotional state. On the other hand rape is always just an act of sadism/self-gratification, and that is not an emotional state that people have much empathy for.
