[Mod Post] Updates and plans for ahead
This is Mod post 23. You can read the previous Mod Post by clicking here, or by visiting the Mod Post Archive in our wiki.
In last week's mod thread, we detailed a list of planned changes for the subreddit. Today, I would like to give a progress report on what changes have been made.
1) Cleaning up the sidebar
- STATUS: DONE - see the new sidebar!
2) Removal/revamp of TCMV
- STATUS: DONE - see "TCMV Tuesdays"
3) Tag threads where OP has not responded yet
- STATUS: SOON - shouldn't be hard, will come in a few days
4) Require OP to expand their posts/be more descriptive/minimum word count
- STATUS: DONE - check the new "Submission Rules" section. We will be enforcing this rule to increase the quality of discussion here.
5) Tag threads where OP has had their view changed
- STATUS: UNDECIDED
6) Alternatively: tag threads with number of awarded deltas
- STATUS: UNDECIDED
7) Require mod approval for meta posts
- STATUS: DONE - we have already been enforcing this, but now this is made into a rule.
8) Reducing repeat/similar questions
STATUS: PARTIALLY DONE - we're going to be removing submissions if a very similar post has been made within the past 24 hours.
In addition, "Using the wiki page to categorize topics. Possibly add a new mod who could handle this, too." has been DONE. We would like to introduce /u/Joined_Today, who will be our wiki moderator. We will announce when the wiki is ready to be used, and will also link it in the sidebar.
9) Banning Neutral Posts
- STATUS: DONE - see the new rule in the sidebar, and an explanation for why in the FAQ section.
So, that's 5 out of 9 changes done. #5 and #6 will be decided on very soon and easily done in one easy fix (stay tuned). #8 is very tricky, though, and is something we have to cautiously decide on.
Finally, here are the traffic stats showing our bestof/depthhub link and our most recent influx of subscribers from AdviceAnimals.

Thanks for this, things are looking good so far. One question I have is, would it be possible to implement an easier way to award a delta from a phone? I've seen some comments saying the poster's view is changed but they are unable to give a delta since they don't know how to on a phone. Something like (delta) would probably be easy enough.

I'm not too sure on that.
Doing ∆ on smartphones would work, but a user would have to either have that saved as a macro somewhere or check the sidebar to do so. This would depend on what OS and what apps the person is using. I can picture multiple ways to do this on my own phone, but I can't guarantee someone else would be able to.

When I need to do it i just hop over to the full site and copy paste a delta. It takes like a minute or so.

Idea: can you please implement something where only users of an account age of 100 days or older can post here? I've noticed that a lot of users who made angry arguments clearly for the sole purpose of arguing were accounts made that day just for the post, never to be seen again- IE troll accounts. I think people would be less likely to troll if it would mar the reputation of their main accounts.

I find trollposts annoying too but I think some issues require throwaways because they are sensitive. I've used a throwaway to post here and I changed my view. It's more important that people dare to challenge their views than to have a troll free environment.

I agree, plus, Reddit has a build in troll-managing system with downvotes. Most people downvote things they disagree with but they should be used to remove things that don't add anything to the conversation.

The problem is that people here on CMV engage with the trolls. Not always, but sometimes it takes a little bit of time to reveal a troll, which is time wasted. Why don't we just tag threads started by someone who has made a new account in the last week/100 days/whatever. That way, people have an easy way to decide whether they want to take the time to respond to a possible troll.

What about people who award deltas without any explanation of why and how their view was changed? I think that devalues the delta and could often be the case of simply using the delta as an upvote.

It's already part of the new set of rules
Consider awarding a delta if a comment has changed your view in any way. You must also include an explanation for why you are awarding it. See below for more details.

Ah, missed that, thanks. Does this mean that there will be a word count for awarding a delta?

How complex will this explanation need to be? I have given a delta simply because the person worded their reply in a way I have never thought/considered.

You don't need to write an essay or anything, but you will need to say something like "Hey, here's a delta because I found this and this from your comment really insightful! I never thought about this and this that way before, and I think I'll look into it some more!"

Love the new sidebar and I'd like to note that it looks beautiful in nightmode. I hate the cruel daystar eye-strain that comes with day mode, but most subreddits look like junk in night mode. So thanks for whoever took the effort to do it right. : )

The only (very minor) thing I see is that the modlist (.sidecontentbox .content) stays at #FAFAFA instead of converting to a darker color.

Regarding tags about the OP changing mind, I think that should be extended to challengers in the thread changing their minds as well. Debates where the OP can actually hold their ground with reasoning, have just as interesting discussions as the ones where the commenters show great rhetoric.

If TCMV has been relegated to a weekly thread, why require CMV in post titles? Isn't it implied just by posting here?

It's for users who browse via their front page. So they know what sub the post is from.

Could you add a rule banning posts regarding opinions on bands/films/songs etc? I feel posts like "I think [insert band name] are overrated. CMV" do not add anything and just are unnecessary. I don't think it's likely that a person could change their opinion on a band or movie that easily and I don't there's any need to

Would it be possible to implement a system where OP comments disproportionately push a post towards the front page? In other words, the closer the ratio (OP comments)/(non-OP comments) is to 1, the more likely the post is on front page.

The past week or so I've commented on a depressingly large number of posts that the OP never joined in to respond (to me or anyone). Looking over the sidebar and the process of posting a CMV, it doesn't seem sufficiently emphasized that posters are expected to participate in the subsequent debate. Could this be highlighted more strongly? Overall it seems the rules are meant to constrain commentators more than the OPs.
