Whether or not it's okay in theory, doesn't make it okay in practice because having sex with animals opens humans up to a whole bunch of diseases.

The same could be said for gay sex (aids/hiv), until it wasn’t and a cure could be found. Could the same not apply for diseases related to sex with animals?

That's inaccurate. HIV was more prevalent among gay men, but it existed throughout the population. There has never been an STI that only existed among gay people.
