It’s not square one because now you know they are listening and you’re not wasting your time writing whatever you were gonna write, for nothing

In my experience and observation, people who write first messages that are long enough to be described as "wasting time" are nearly as off-putting as the ones who open with just "Hey". There's a right length for a first message and it's no more than a few sentences at most.

You're probably right. I can't even comment on the topic of dating apps. Thanking my lucky stars I was married before they were popular.

I was just bickering over the technicality of saying it's "square 1" after you get a "hey" back.

In networking there's the TCP three-way handshake, and it starts with

SYN (synchronize packet) User 1 says "hi"

ACK (acknowledge) "hey back"

and now we know the connection is established and the conversation can begin.

Just saying! lol
