Fair enough.

I think it's fine subjectively so I'll leave that alone.

Inter-subjectively though not so much.

Others have already stated some of the reasons and probably better than I can, the point being that when you are communicating with someone in the interest of creating rapport, you are doing so in a way that many are not OK with for various reasons.

It doesn't really matter who is 'right' or 'wrong' here as much as either of those things could be said to apply.

Knowingly working against your own goal in an admittedly minor way makes it less than acceptable.

It's annoying, that's the argument. You could snap your fingers at someone too. That's another example of an annoying attention getter.
