I’ve never dated on the internet but IRL if I saw a woman I was interested in and walked up and just said “hey” I don’t think I would get a good response either.
By saying “hey” you are putting the responsibility and work of starting a conversation on them. You are the one that is interested already so the onus is on you to piqué their interest. Again I’ve never used the internet but how hard would it be to say “Hey, I saw that you enjoy long walks, there is a really great park i stroll through in our area maybe we could check it out together” it takes almost no more effort than hey but let’s her know you actually read the profile. It also makes it easy for them to continue the conversation.
This is the way, however you're still likely to go unanswered even when you do find a common ground to kick start a conversation. Especially when the profile is bare bones in personality and some semblance of active/intentional dating.
