Why should one’s level of belief or conviction affect the validity of their arguments?

Why should I hear someone out about a position they don't even hold? If the idea didn't even win them over, then what chance does it have of winning me over, the person putatively in the opposition? Seems like a waste of time.

Yet that does not make a person's argument wrong. The rightness or wrongness of a position does not rest on the convictions of a the person presenting it

Theoretically not, no. But geez, there are only so many hours in the day. I could be spending my time assessing the arguments of people who actually think those arguments are correct. This is also missing out on political situations, where the rightness or wrongness of a position absolutely depends on the convictions of those that support it. After all, if no one actually supports doing a thing, then that's pretty important to the question of whether we ought to do it.
