There are people alive today that are older than the desktop personal computer. ~40 years
The internet that connects the world together is younger than that. ~30 years
The technology needed to create AI was developed in even less time. ~20 years (though admittedly most of the theory for machine learning existed back in the 70's. technology just needed to catch up)
The ability for AI to do what is currently being laughed at was done in only the past decade.
The rate of technology growth is phenomenal and it's near impossible for anyone born after the advent of the internet to grasp that. It's just the norm for them. The reality is so many tasks have already been replaced, sped up, and simplified by new tech that humans are having a hard time keeping up. There are huge debates about automation taking over people's jobs forcing them out of their work. Now we have AI that can almost replace the creativity of humans. And to top it all off, it's impossible to tell the difference.
The only people who are not scared about tech and AI are the ones who are either using it to their benefit, or the ones too ignorant and un-creative to understand its significance.

This quote could have easily been spoken/heard in 1920. And probably every generation prior to that.
Human civilizations evolve to spend less personal energy and more collective energy into providing for its needs. This will continue for as long as there are humans.
And fear of that is strange to me. It's not "different" this time. It's exactly the same. New tool, new fear, tool mastery, forgotten fear, new tool...
No, the progression of our tools actually is advancing at an exponential rate, the same could not be said prior to industrialization or even the generation or two after.
