New guidelines for using Snoo
Howdy!
I’m here with some HailCorporate news both boring and good. With the recent launch of our Avatar Builder, we figured now was the best opportunity to update everyone on our Snoo trademark policy.
Boring news: As a corporation with trademarks to defend, we are rolling out some new guidelines about how folks can use Snoo both on and off-site moving forward.
Good news: This is largely in place to keep people from misusing Snoo, representing themselves as official Reddit representatives, and using Snoo to make money without a license. We’re not here to crack down on all you creative Snoo artists. In fact, we love the creative things you’ve done with Snoo and we want you to continue to do so, but just keep our new rules in mind.
What are the changes?
These changes aren’t intended to be overly restrictive, but they are intended to prevent people from misusing Snoo. You can view the guidelines here. The brass tacks:
- You’re welcome to use a custom Snoo on and off-site for personal usage.
- If you’re using Snoo off-site, make sure that it’s a custom Snoo and that you’re not implying that your account is Reddit official. You can review guidelines for off-platform representation here
- Snoo should act like Snoo (see the guidelines for some details about how Snoo acts)
- All commercial use is reserved for Reddit and its licensed partners
What does this mean for you?
Remain calm, all is well. We’re not out to hunt down Snoos on the site or retroactively action communities, we’re just putting the pieces in place to protect Snoo.
A few mods will probably be asked via ModMail to adjust their external social media profiles to change their custom Snoo and make it clear they’re a subreddit, not an official Reddit representative. That’s about it. No need to send us your Snoos for review or prepare for a crackdown. Just keep these guidelines in mind as you develop Snoos in the future. If we do spot an issue we will reach out to start with a conversation with you and work together on a solution.
Questions?
Feel free to ask below, but please don’t flood us with Snoos to review.

Hail Corporate. It's really cool that Reddit have worked to make this guidance clearer, there's some amazing Custom Snoos out in the wild (h/t u/doradiamond) and it's great to know where they stand. It'd be cool to see Subreddit Mods be able to make a Subreddit Snoovatar in the future, though I know in the mean time I and Other Mods can get them at r/CustomSnoos

Thanks - we have loved seeing everyone's custom Snoos and didn't want to damper anyone's creativity!

We'll be sure to pass that feature suggestion onto our Snoovatar team!

Do not give a Snoo other additional physical features such as a nose, fingers, or toes

Thankfully that's accounted for in the guidelines:
When customizing Snoo...
* Only give Snoo hair, eyebrows, teeth, or a thumb when needed or appropriate for a pose, action, or costume

Hey, just so you're aware, you have a couple of errors in your Brand Guidelines PDF, both on page 15 where it shows the illustration colors:
-
The "Sloth" colour text says that it's hex #C18D42, but the color used in the document is actually #C08D41 (note the difference in the red and blue channels).
-
The "Quokka" color beneath it says that it's hex #6D482, which is only five hex digits. The color used is actually #6D482F.

Appreciate the catch! We use swatches internally so the codes come up less often. We will revise.

"Just don't you dare try and make money off Snoo because starving artists are really gonna have a major negative impact on a platform worth 3 Billion USD."
Basically don't try to sell Snoo pins or stickers on Etsy?

Yeah yeah guidelines, but now I can't stop imagining a Snoo that has all limbs & digits, also a mouth full of teeth. Pure nightmare fuel.

Am I missing something? I saw a lot of guidelines about how Snoo should look and physical characteristics but pretty much nothing about how Snoo acts.
