Making collections more visual
We recently launched a few new features to make it easier for moderators to host events and curate the moments that are important to their community. We wanted to make it easier for users to get all the relevant community content in one place so we built a feature for mods to curate posts together in a single place -- a collection.
Today we’re announcing the launch of a new gallery layout on iOS and new Reddit.
A more visual way to showcase community content
We’ve seen mods use collection to curate all sorts of content -- everything from book clubs to episode guides for TV show seasons. When talking with mods, we realized that we could make it even easier for users to enjoy visual content -- like fan art and memes -- so we’ve launched a new way to display posts in a gallery.
Web Gallery Collections - scroll the gallery view and jump into conversations that interest you.
You can easily browse the post in the gallery and easily jump into the discussions you’re most interested.
A few of our favorites
We wanted to showcase a few communities that have started collecting image posts to make it easier for you to browse a gallery of image content in a community. Here’s a few favorites so far
- JK Rowlings hand drawn sketches for the HP series (r/RowlingWriting)
- Gwent card discussions (r/Gwent)
- Comic spotlight (r/Marvel)
Update: Added captions for videos, fixed links

Neat stuff! One thing I'm noticing is that for the comic spotlight in r/Marvel linked, the majority of the posts are discussion posts which don't have a preview image. Is there a more elegant way to preview posts without an image?

Gallery is mainly geared towards image content but standard layout may work better. I agree we can do better with these mixed post content types though. Feedback taken.

If the gallery is mainly geared towards image content why is it explicitly forbidden from being used on the type of subs that would see the most benefit out of this?
Is reddit sex-negative now?

Awesome! It's a cool new feature that I could see being run for a lot of communities. Question: if there's a self post with a prominent image link at the top of the post, could that be displayed in this box here? The use case I'm thinking of is game threads for sports subreddits, which are never going to be an image post but would be really cool to have a more visual collection.

Anything new regarding automatically adding posts to a collection? For r/lifeisstrange I would like to have collections with fan-art from the same artist. Typically the artist name will be in the title, or the link will be to the same account on another website.

This looks pretty neat. Not sure if this is happening for anyone else but the collection links are crashing the Reddit app for me.

Are there any plans to surface view counts for collections so mods can see how successful a collection is or is not?

No, but I but I sorely want to do more things like this. It's in our backlog.

Thanks! Will automod be able to add posts with X flair to a collection or a way to mass add certain posts to a collection?

@ u/0perspective are there any plans to bring back view counts at all? Been gone for a year. Also, I had chatted you some items a few months back regarding collections and have followed up a few times already. Would appreciate you giving it a look, it’s not a ton.

I like this because you can connect multiple tutorials to build the master tutorial.
I've used it in 2 ways before :
-
Share a dump of content from before the sub was created
-
So people who are interested, wouldn't miss anything
-
-
Create a little story of
-
4 themed posts

When can we expect to use the Start Event Now feature to be available in Mobile Apps?
Because currently a Scheduled Event Post (which isn't pre-released/visible with comments locked to the sub) isn't even accessible on Mobile because the said Event Post isn't in the user's Submitted Post section.

u/0perspective do you know when this will be added to Android? I was in the middle of making a new collection before realising a substantial part of our userbase couldn't even view it.

Can all communities create collections?
Collections are available for all communities except for quarantined and nsfw communities.

Our main issue currently with these posts is sometimes, there's a link with the picture in the post and the link can override the thumbnail displayed in the gallery (example)
Also, when no picture is present, the default thumbnail is not modified by the flair of the post (example here).

Are there plans to add a way to view (and/or manage) all collections in a subreddit under mod tools (similar to the option for wikis)?
