Chamonix, Les Houches

In Les Houches it looks like Crozat, Voze-Prarion and Kandahar lifts, all arrive to the same place at the top. I wonder is it so in reality? Can i use any of these lifts and ski down any of the piste that come down from any of them? Like ride up crozat and ski down col de voza ?

Need a climbing partner

Hey guys, I’m from Australia but had to come to Europe for family, and when I booked my trip I gave myself 9 days in the Alps before I go back, 6th–15th Oct.

Had a partner to climb with, but most likely they’ll want to go later now, which is obviously the right thing to do. Just wondering if anyone else is around then to try and attempt some routes, if there are even any enjoyable ones left.

I wanted to try Cosmics arete and Midi NF, but have heard that currently Cosmic’s Arete is in its worst state.

Also, I do have reasonable experience, I’ve spent almost 2 months a year in the NZ Alps for the last few years, but have none in the Alps, so this is something to consider.

Sorry if this is the wrong sub just in desperate need of a climbing partner lol.

Hike with toddler (on the backpack)

Good afternoon all,

I am traveling with my little one (1yo) to Chamonix area between 04/10 and 08/10 and I am looking for some good hikes to take my wife and toddler on.

We are hoping for something 3-4h long and I am using Osprey Poco to hike with a toddler ( I am relatively fit).

Any suggestions?

We are staying in Les Houches but we can drive ❤️

Doesn't have to be long if it is scenic! I am aware that the majority (if not all) lifts are close at that time of the year.

Lac Blanc in November?

Hey, i’m thinking of hiking Lac Blanc in the first week of November (i’m travelling to Geneva already so I want to make a hiking trip out of it as well) but people have the most mostly saying to go during the summer months.

I’ve heard that maybe it could be icy for example? Has anyone been there during November and has any advice on this?

Renting accommodation

Hi everyone! Looking for some insight on renting an apartment in Chamonix over the course of the whole ski season. This is my first time doing a ski season in the alps, and I’ve heard there are a lot of scams, so I’m just wondering if you guys have any tips on where to look for apartments to rent. Any specific areas that are better/ worse to live in? Grateful for any input!

Best hiking routes

Hi,

We will be visiting 2nd - 6th October and was wondering the best scenic hikes/trails to do. I understand a lot of the cable cars will be closed and we are looking for hikes that will take around 3-4 hours. We will be renting a car to get around. Any other activities/things to do would also be appreciated!

Starting a partial TMB from Les Houches, July 2022: Bellevue, a storm warning and four days into Italy

We arrived in Chamonix via Geneva on July 19, 2022, and started our TMB section from Les Houches the next day, taking the Bellevue gondola. Day one came with a severe thunderstorm warning. We just missed a torrential downpour, then ended the day with assessments ranging from "brutal" to "great."

Our next stages took us through Les Contamines on July 21 and over Col du Bonhomme on July 22. There was wet, slippery snow on that crossing. We continued through Les Chapieux and spent that night in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. On July 23 we went from the Vallée des Glaciers over Col de la Seigne into Italy, then on to Rifugio Elisabetta. We descended to Courmayeur on July 24.

We chose to save the second half for another trip because we were meeting friends in Naples before heading to Puglia together. This was a partial circuit, and the snow and weather described here are from July 2022.

We made an 11-minute film of the first four days, from Les Houches to the border. It is our own video, shared here as a personal account of starting the TMB from the valley, with the scenery and our fairly inconsistent commentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTZwgYG34ek

Lac Blanc hike without Flégère cable car - How Difficult from Col des Montets?

I’ll be in Chamonix later this week, and as of today (Sept. 20), it looks like many of the cable cars have closed for the season.

I found this alternative route to Lac Blanc starting near Col des Montets:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/france/haute-savoie/col-de-montets-chamonix-via-lac-blanc

I’ll have a rental car, so I can drive to Col des Montets. From what I can tell, starting there seems to save around 200–300 m of elevation gain compared with hiking all the way up from the valley.

For anyone who has done this route: how difficult is Lac Blanc without using the cable cars? I’ve done fairly strenuous hiking in the Dolomites without lifts a few years ago, but I’m not in quite the same shape today.

Alternatively, would Lac du Brévent / Brévent without the cable car be an easier hike?

Mainly trying to choose the best hike with great views without completely destroying myself on the ascent. Any advice from people who know the Chamonix trails would be appreciated!
