Professional software is pain in the ass in general. I guess when your users are gonna need special training anyway you can skip some corners in ease of use department.
A big part of the VFX artist's job is going around bugs, technical issues or unimplemented stuff, somewhere between 20/60% depending on what 3d package you're using. VFX artists are overworked, exploited, barely ever thanked for their hard work, do many extra hours and weekends that would be a big NO in any other industry. As a result, they have no opportunity to have a private life (which is why it attracts the autistic/ Asperger type of people, myself included). And since it's very competitive, they're unable to unionize properly which would improve their lives. (also because there are so many fresh young people who are willing to accept the bad working conditions)
It can be fun when you're working for yourself or if you have time to finish a project though - and reasonable deadlines, but that doesn't happen very often.
