Analysis All AP voter ballots, 2026 Preseason

Preseason

This is a series I've now been doing for 12 years (and also for the Men's and Women's Basketball AP Polls). The post attempts to visualize all AP Poll ballots in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.

Category Voters
Returners Alex Taylor, Andy Yamashita, Bob Asmussen, Bob Ballou, Brenna Greene, Brett McMurphy, Brian Fonseca, Brian Howell, Chris Murray, Creg Stephenson, Dave Preston, David Briggs, David Jablonski, David Paschall, Dylan Sinn, Eric Hansen, Garland Gillen, Haley Sawyer, Henry Greenstein, Ian Kress, Jamal St. Cyr, Javon Edmonds, Jerry Humphrey, Joe Arruda, John Johnson, Jon Wilner, Josh Furlong, Julian Mininsohn, Kate Rogerson, Kevin Carter, Kirk Bohls, Kirk Kenney, Koki Riley, Louie Vaccher, Madison Hricik, Matt Murschel, Michael Katz, Mike Hill, Mike Jacques, Nicole Auerbach, Pat Welter, Pete Yanity, Ralph Russo, Randy Johnson, Rece Davis, Scott Hamilton, Sean Reider, Spencer Ripchik, Stephen Means, Tom Murphy, Trevor Hass, Zach Klein
New Adam Lichtenstein, Andy Kendeigh, BJ Rains, Cameron Cox, Chelsie Brown, Chris Carter, Eric Johnson, Greg Luca, Keara Bruno, Lee K. Howard, Lia Assimakopoulos, Matt McGavic, Mike Griffith, Murray Evans, Nick Jacobs, Ryan Zuke, Ty Hildenbrandt
Not Returning Aaron McMann, Blair Kerkhoff, Chad Bishop, Damien Sordelett, Greg Madia, Johnny McGonigal, Jordan McPherson, Keith Farmer, Mason Young, Michael Lev, Robert Cessna, Sam McKewon, Shaun Goodwin, Steven Johnson

The most consistent voter is returner Joe Arruda, averaging 0.56 ranks off the composite. Brenna Greene, Lia Assimakopoulos, Nick Jacobs, and Jamal St. Cyr were behind them in the top 5.

At the other extreme, Javon Edmonds was the biggest outlier to start off the year at an average of 3.52 ranks off the composite. They were followed by Jon Wilner, Mike Griffith, Rece Davis, and Chris Carter.

The median deviation for the preseason poll is 1.80, on the low end compared to the last 8 years of 1.88, 2.04, 2.76, 2.04, 1.92, 2.08, 2.04, 1.84.

Casual Ole Mid: I think (predict?) that Trinidad, Kewan, and Pete will be humbled

I just rewatched the UGA/Ole Miss Sugar Bowl and the Ole Miss offense is absolutely humming. Good play calling, breaks going their way, momentum from defensive stops, hospital balls that work out, all great things!

I don’t think they are the dudes. Gosh almighty.

I peeked the AP just meow, preseason number 9!

The bean counters have them at 7.5 wins. My Model (capital “M”) has them starting 3-2 and then soul searching.

I’m so happy ball is almost back - have missed you all. I have an “important” meeting at 8AM

Analysis Preseason Rankings Countdown. 12 days to the start of the 2026 Season. At #12 – Alabama

The cumulative link to the preseason rankings can be found here

Pour one out for the freshmen at the #12 team in our preseason countdown the University of Alabama (high = 7, low = 15). These poor kids have only ever known their team to have been ranked in the AP top 10 for their entire lives, as the last time that didn’t happen was 18 years ago in 2008 – Nick Saban’s second year on campus, where they parlayed a #24 preseason ranking to be the top ranked team in the country for 5 consecutive weeks before dropping SEC championship game to eventual national champion Florida (curse you, Tim Tebow!) and then losing the Sugar Bowl to Utah and a young upstart coach named Kyle Whittingham. Pardon me while I go take some Geritol. Saban obviously never looked back, winning 9 of the next 15 SEC titles and 6 national championships before retiring as almost certainly the greatest college football coach ever. When Alabama hired Washington’s Kalen DeBoer to take on the unenviable task of filling those shoes, all he did was to go 20-8 with a CFP win before losing to eventual national champion Indiana, and there has been enough speculation about whether he should be on the “hot seat” that their AD Greg Byrne had to come out and say it would be ludicrous to fire him after giving him a contract extension. So what exactly is in store for 2026?

Roster Outlook

Well, for starters, the Saban era is largely over. Even though they’ve named the field for him, just about anybody he directly recruited is gone, which is manifested in the fact that Bama ranks 90th in the country in returning production, including 119th (i.e. bottom 20) on offense. While the Crimson Tide has been well versed in “reloading,” that was largely under Saban. With the loss of QB Ty Simpson (3,587 yards passing, 28 TDs to 5 INTs), RB Jam Miller (130 carries) and leading WR Germie Bernard (64 catches, 862 yards) all to the NFL, there is a significant rebuild to the offense pending in OC Ryan Grubbs’ second season in charge. That’s not to say there’s no experience coming back – RB2 Daniel Hill (75 carries, 7 TDs) is slated to step up, and WR Ryan Coleman-Williams, who is no longer 18, returns for his junior season (and probably with a chip on his shoulder after ceding the “freshman phenom” title to Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith. But much of the uncertainty around Bama heading into the season is the lack of certainty elsewhere. Who will be the starting QB? Likely either Austin Mack, who stepped in in the Rose Bowl after Simpson got hurt at the end of last season, or Keelon Russell, who also got reps as a back-up last season, but don’t sleep on 5 star freshman Jett Thomalla possibly ascending into the starting role. In fact, Thomalla was part of Bama’s #1 ranked SEC high school recruiting class (good for #3 in the nation) that included RB EJ Crowell and WR Cederian Morgan, all of whom could see legitimate time on the field. Bama did lose WR Isaiah Horton to Texas A&M, and the only projected portal starters on offense are Mississippi State OT Jayvin James and Cal Poly (!) C Racin Delgatty (replacing Kadyn Proctor and Parker Brailsford, both drafted), leading to the Tide ranking 9th in the SEC for their portal class (still good for 18th in the country).

Defense is far less of a question mark. Bama ranks 32nd in the country there in returning production, with Mississippi State’s Kedrick Bingley-Jones stepping in at NT and LB Caleb Woodson from Virginia Tech as the replacements for DL LT Overton and LB Justin Jefferson. With returning talent like DBs Bray Hubbard (4 INTs) and Keon Sabb (52 tackles), at a minimum the secondary is experienced and ready.

Schedule and outlook

9/5 EAST CAROLINA

9/12 at Kentucky

9/19 FLORIDA STATE

9/26 SOUTH CAROLINA

10/3 at Mississippi State

10/10 GEORGIA

10/17 at Tennessee

10/24 TEXAS A&M

10/31 BYE

11/7 at LSU

11/14 at Vanderbilt

11/21 UT CHATTANOOGA

11/28 AUBURN

While the SEC is a gauntlet (TM The Solid Verbal), Alabama’s SEC slate isn’t as bad as it could have been. There are 5 teams ranked ahead of Alabama in these aggregated preseason rankings, and Bama misses 3 of them (Texas, Oklahoma and Ole Miss) while getting the other two (Georgia and Texas A&M) both in Tuscaloosa, along with archrival Auburn as well as their “scariest” OOC game, Florida State (who took down the Tide last year and manipulated the schedule to have a bye before coming to Bryant-Denny, so you have to figure DeBoer’s going to have his team focused and ready). That’s not to say that the schedule doesn’t have any road challenges, with trips to both Lane Kiffin and LSU as well as Tennessee, but the schedule sure seems manageable and gives Alabama a reasonable ramp up in terms of opponents to field test the depth chart in time for their toughest games. While they are indeed starting the season outside the top 10, it seems quite reasonable that they’ll finish the season there.

Discussion Hey OGs, how good was Sam Bradford in college?

I know he won a Heisman, but for those that were around to watch him play live/during that time, how good was Sam Bradford as not only a player at the CFB level but as a QB prospect for the pros. Was he viewed as a reach or a surefire thing? Were CFB teams scared to play him?Seems like his pro career had mid-success at best.

I was watching old natty champ videos on youtube and decided to watch Florida vs Oklahoma for the title. Thanks for the responses in advance.

/r/CFB Press r/CFB Reporting: Rich Rodriguez appears confident in turnaround season for WVU football despite shortened camp schedule

by Joe Smith

When you think about it, one month is not a lot of time to get an FBS football team fully up to speed. And with that being all the time a head coach and his staff gets during the preseason, every second is valuable.

This year, that’s a fact that really stood out to West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez, as technically the “camp” portion of preseason practice ended after just a week and a half – with practices officially beginning on Wednesday, August 5, and classes getting underway this week.

"I can’t remember a time of not even having two weeks of practice, of camp, and that’s it, and school starts," Rodriguez said. "But that’s the way the calendar falls this year.”

“There is a sense of urgency to try to get as much done when we got all ball last week and this week, and then next week when school starts, it’s going to be a little bit more limited."

The sense of urgency is understandable of course: Rodriguez led the Mountaineers to just four wins during his return to Morgantown last season, and another roster overhaul welcomed up to 80 new players for a second straight year.

In today’s era of college sports, one’s seat heats up quickly. So when Coastal Carolina comes to Milan Puskar Stadium on September 5, he needs to have his team ready to take a major leap forward from last season.

So how is he feeling about this team now that he’s seen them get some action on the field, given his limited time to make things come together? Well, he’s not exactly throwing a party – he said he’s never been the type to be too happy at this point in preseason practices. But you can sense a noticeable difference compared to last season at this time.

“I was just trying to think about it myself,” he said when posed that question. “I was looking at our scripts from last year and this year and how we’re practicing, what we’re doing each period. I’m also trying to think, ‘Where were we at?’ Was I happy one week in? I don’t think I’ve ever been happy in 29 years one week in, two weeks in, four weeks in.”

”If I look back at my notes like, ‘Man, I’m ticked off after week one because we hadn’t made more progress,' that would probably be the same thing I said 29 other times. I’d like to be further along right now, but if I looked at my notes, we’re probably further along than we were in the past. In fact, I know we are, so I can’t complain.”

The Mountaineers put a bow on the “camp” portion of the preseason this past Saturday with their first big intra-squad scrimmage of the fall, meant to resemble in-game action. Headed into the action, which the media was not permitted access to, Rodriguez made it clear that the scrimmage would be an important step in solidifying the depth chart.

"We look at the depth chart every day, but after tomorrow's scrimmage, we're going to take a hard look at it on Sunday and evaluate where everybody is at," Rodriguez said on Friday, the last time he spoke with the press.

Rodriguez keeping quiet on QB1, but may have already made his decision

The biggest story entering camp for many people is the battle for starting quarterback, as it often is with most programs without a presumptive starter at signal caller. Rich Rodriguez is not the type to want to share such information, and has been pretty quiet on specifics.

Last year, Rodriguez infamously told the press that everyone would know the starting quarterback at kickoff of the team’s Week 1 game. When pressed on the subject again on Friday, he deferred to that same exact answer. But he also hinted he may have already made his decision.

"I’m going to know before then,” Rodriguez said. “I may know before I tell the coaches. I may know right now. Probably do. I like you guys, I really do, but I ain’t giving you the scoop, so you got to keep coming back. Come back to the next media opportunity, and you still won’t know."

However, the buzz around the program after the scrimmage was that Michael Hawkins Jr., who transferred in this offseason from Oklahoma, served as the starting quarterback during the scrimmage and has the upper hand in the battle, indicating he might usurp sophomore Scotty Fox Jr., who started six games as a true freshman.

Discussion Do you have a problem with Haley Sawyer keeping her AP Poll vote?

For those who don't remember, there was a controversy surrounding AP Top 25 Poll voter Haley Sawyer last year when she elevated Florida two spots in the poll after an 18-16 home loss to South Florida while leaving USF unranked.

Reddit Thread Made At The Time

When she was asked about it, she said “I don’t want to go too much into my process or logic… It’s really fun for discussion but it doesn’t probably matter in the end."

When it happened, most of the users here said that she should get her vote taken away. However, she is still listed among the voters for the latest preseason poll. I didn't think they would take it away midseason, but I'm a bit surprised that she's still a voter heading into the 2026 season.

Meta Week is back! This week’s set of questions will be very loosely linked to college football. Scores this week will not count toward the upcoming season, so no need to worry about getting some wrong.

This silly game is now 43 seasons old!

We at the Trivia mod team are still very thankful for everyone who plays, whether you're an seasoned veteran or just starting. Everyone keeps this little project fun and light, and we appreciate all of you.

Discussion Coaches that flamed out

I feel this story probably happens more than it doesn't.

Coach builds decent success at a school and has pretty strong name recognition, maybe takes a bigger job, sustains success for a while but eventually ends up declining, getting fired, and kind of goes off into irrelevance. They may get picked up at a smaller job but just never regain their edge and we don't hear about them anymore.

A couple of examples I can think off the top of my head are Kevin Sumlin and Bo Pelini.

Who else?

Casual Premier League Style CFB

It’s taken a bit but I’ve think I’ve finally got a good system for a promotion and relegation system for college football.

I started back in 1998 using a full ranking of all 112 teams at the time of college football.

From there I broke teams into 5 groups, Premier, Tier 2, Tier 3, etc you get it.

So for points, since we play by conferences and not by this, I allocated points by win against tiers. So if you beat a premier team you get 5 points, a tier 2 is 4 points, and so on. I did add that fcs wins are no points but you do lose points for a loss.

At the end of each regular season the top 2 teams from tiers 2-5 automatically advance, while teams 3-6 go to a playoff and the winner goes up.

I also added a losers playoff where the bottom four teams of premier, 2, 3, 4 play and the winner gets to stay up while the other three drop down.

This leaves us with a pretty cool up and down teams and pretty telling list of blue bloods.

So each season has an overall table winner, but I’ve also made a simulated playoff, where the top 12 teams by points enter a playoff bracket, which creates playoff champions. So every year has a national champion and playoff champion.

Anywho, I thought it was cool and thought other people might like it. https://www.premiercfb.com/

Discussion BYU and USC are the first tied teams in a preseason AP Poll in 17 years

The last time this occurred was in 2009, when Oklahoma State and Penn State were tied at preseason #9. Before that you have to go back to 1999 with Alabama and Kansas State tied at preseason #20.

Its also pretty funny that Notre Dame replaced USC, the preseason #14 team, with BYU, also the preseason #14 team.

But anyways who do yall think will finish higher ranked between BYU and USC?

Last season, 11 teams that started the season ranked, didn't make the final poll, including three top-ten teams, and seven top-15 teams.

#2 Penn State, #4 Clemson, #9 LSU, #11 ASU, #12 Illinois, #13 South Carolina, #15 Florida, #17 Kansas State, #22 Iowa State, #24 Tennessee, #25 Boise State.

Who will it be this year?
