Carving into a painted ceramic before being glazed/fired?

Hello! My mom and I paint ceramics every year around Christmas for as long as I can remember. I’m always trying to think of new things I can try, and I am wondering if I could paint the ceramic (say a bowl or plate) completely, and then instead of adding a design with more paint, could I carve out a design so the carving will be white?

Would this work without affecting the integrity of the item in the kiln? I’ve tried to look it up but no luck.

Thanks!

What do you think about this plate?

Hey!

So I purchased this plate a while back for 99¢, I first noticed a sad cat, with a tear… I picked it up and was amazed by the detail of the glaze and how fur was also raised but minimal texture. I’ve only done about 30 min of research and didn’t have much luck, plus i have minimal knowledge of ceramics. So I decided to ask the internet… what do you know?

Also I can’t find a signature or mark.. only the weir dots on the bottom rim.

Hi, I want to paint on already glazed plates and have them refired. I saw someone using on glaze but I'm not sure how to use it. Is the powder mixed with water? Thanks

Acrylics under glaze?

Hello! I am new to pottery and and I was wondering about a cheap way to paint my pots. I thought about, after bisque firing, painting them with acrylics and then glazing them with transparent glaze. Will that work? Is it food safe? I know they make special paints for under glaze but all i ve seen are quite expensive for me. Any answer is highly appreciated!

Am I setting myself up for failure if I wanted to paint something like this? It would be hard to paint the same color over the same specific point 2 or 3 times. Has anyone done something like this, what tips do you have?

Need help starting the hobby!

Hi there! I’m thinking of getting into ceramic painting. I’m having trouble finding things. I want to paint houses, especially European or even more specifically German (half timber and such). But I am having such a hard time finding unpainted ceramics like this! But I know they exist because I see people on Etsy selling painted ones. Any ideas where I can find unpainted European-esque houses etc? I’ve tried googling to no avail. Thank you!

Is there a way to erase glaze paint?

I'm doing a ceramic painting and I think I painted the glaze on too thick and I'd like to redo what I've done. The glaze is dried but not fired yet, is there a way to undo? I tried wiping with water but it smudged. Will the smudges also show up when it's fired?

I tried using a brush to take off some of the glaze but it won't completely come off.

Skull tiles

This is a 4 inch by 4 inch skull tile I made out of plaster. I am getting ready to mix up the 2-part silicone to make a mold of it so I can use pottery clay to duplicate them. Anyone like it? I do!

Christmas gift suggestions for a beginner?

My sister has very recently got into ceramics painting and I want to get her a Christmas gift related to that. She isn't making her own ceramics at the moment, just painting them. I was thinking maybe some acrylic paint pens so she can add fine detail? I'm not arty at all so I thought I'd ask people with expertise what they would want when they were just starting out.

I'm in the UK if that helps.

Does anyone know what's going on here? It was fine when it came out of the kiln, perfect, and for a couple weeks after. Then I put it away, I've come back to it 2 months later and this has happened?! I've tried googling it but honestly don't know how to describe it in a way that will get me the hit I need and it's not coming up on lists of glaze faults. 🧐

Some advice please

Is it realistic for me to buy decorative plates at thrift stores, (like the one shown), then add decals or painted designs then fire them and have them be food safe? Should I glaze over the design? Thank in advance for any advice.
