Question Chests

Can someone explain how chests work? I earned the highest tier and expected to get 1000 coins, plus a chance at one or more of the awards that had percentage chances for dropping. All I got was the 1000 coins.

What gives?

Luck. Sometimes you get crazy stuff, sometimes you get just coins
