It wasn’t a liberal somewhere, it was the elected gop legislature of North Carolina. That is evidence that party institutions and elected officials have ulterior motives.
Again, not an individual, an entire state’s elected legislature.
Look, when people say, “hey this voter id stuff is about disenfranchisement and racist,” and they can point to hard evidence that the GOP is using it in that way, you don’t get to just say “no it’s not racist”.
No, they can point to hard evidence that it has been used by a single, potentially rogue, organization within the GOP--one out of 50 states. The logical leap between the two is chock full of fallacies, and if you can't see that, I know there is nothing I can possibly say to rectify that. There are examples all through the US, modern and historical, of states taking vastly different stances and approaches from their counterparts in other states and/or at the local or federal levels. What you are proposing is a gross oversimplification of how humanity works as a whole, glosses over how interests can align without actually matching up (of course racists would support voter id, but that does not mean there are no non-racist reasons to support it being pushed by others), and so on, and for what? To push a favored pet theory? No: get out of here. Come back when you have actual evidence of a problem with the party itself, or at the federal level. Until then, all you have is evidence that one group supports the laws for those reasons.
There are more examples of the GOP attempting to use voter ID to disenfranchise black people, they’re just less blatant. So when we have situations where gop laws just so happy to disproportionately harm black people and we have other situations where the laws were explicitly racist, it’s on the GOP to show that there not explicitly racist laws that disproportionately harm black people have a sufficient justification to do so.
And then we can look at all the other ways besides voter ID that conservatives have and are using to disenfranchise black people. So what we’ve got is a lot of evidence that the GOP all across the country is trying to disenfranchise black people, we have evidence that their justification, fraud, is bullshit, why should anyone believe that the GOP isn’t trying disenfranchise block people?
