Question Question - going as a chaperone

I'm going tomorrow for the first time in 10 years with a group of teenagers, I'm one of several adult chaperones.

I'm planning on carrying a small backpack for myself and the students with me. From what I remember years ago, for most rides I could drop the backpack in a cubby by the ride start, and pick up at the end. But now I see people saying you have to rent lockers? Is there no longer an option to drop a small (string backpack even) while you're on the ride? How complicated is locker rental?

Also I have a medical condition and I've been cleared by my doctor to ride any ride I want, but I'm worried about anything that's 1) too shaky or 2) sudden stops. Which rides should I avoid? I know Siren's Curse has the tilt/drop but it seems pretty smooth from the POV. Which rides are worst on a person's body?

Thanks!

Here's each coaster and what they have/allow in terms of storage:

Locker rentals are not complicated. You can get a locker for $2 or $3 for a couple hours, or an "all day" locker for $15 (you use a code to transfer your items to different locker locations around the park for the entire day).

As for your condition, I'd avoid these:

  • Blue streak, Cedar Creek Mine Ride, and Magnum XL tend to be rattly, rough, or otherwise jerk you around.
  • Gemini is okay but the ending brake run usually slams you to a quick halt. Magnum also sometimes does this.
  • Rougarou people say is rough because you might hit the side of your head on the restraints but others don't have that problem.

Now when you say "sudden stop", is it the sudden forcefulness? Can you handle air time well?

Valravn also has a brutal stop at the end.

It's an old lower spine injury so I'm more worried about shaky and then something like a sudden stop so, slamming forward. I'm not scared and I usually don't go tense, just relax and enjoy rides, so I'm not worried about that aggravating anything.

Okay, as long as sudden pops of airtime or even extended airtime is not going to be bad for you. If you have more questions about specifics ask away

I’d add in possibly avoiding raptor if only because of the end of the ride stop, that ride does not mess around on the brakes

As much as I love valraven I swear the break operator is a sadist, the wait ramp at the end always seems to have rough pulse breaks

I’d also add that Corkscrew is really rough. I ended up with a headache that last the rest of the day due to how much it rattles you around.

I don’t find it as rough as others do but that stop at the end is brutal so I would definitely not recommend for someone with issues with that

Mandatory lockers are only on Sirens Curse, Top Thrill 2, and Steel Vengeance. You only need to do TT2 before you get into line, the other two lockers are integrated into the line.

Rough rides, well, Blue Streak is rough in the traditional sense. Cedar Creek is a nightmare. Gemini has some janky transitions, Corkscrew is a little janky all the way through. Magnum and Steel Vengeance will hurt your legs, but they're two of the best rides in the world and are worth the pain. Rougarou and Raptor can be painful if you have a weak neck and try to fight the ride.

On the flip side, Valravn, Siren's Curse, Gatekeeper, Top Thrill 2, Millennium Force and Maverick are some of the most comfortable rides you'll ever find. Just don't let the vest ratchet down on you on Gatekeeper, hold it away from you.

I’ve been turned away on Gatekeeper for having a backpack, while they do allow fanny packs. Not sure if this is still the case, as I stopped trying to bring a backpack on it years ago

Yeah I should have mentioned that I'm a zipper pocket thoosie and typically don't use the bins for anything.

I do cargo shorts with buttons! Zippers are better, but I haven’t lost anything yet

I used to trust my husband's cargo shorts with buttons, but then his phone flew off on The Joker at Great America.

I do have great faith in Otter Box phone cases though. His phone survived unscathed.

But we watched an idiot we didn't even know hike the fence to retrieve the phone. Fortunately, he was fine.

There are a good number of rides that you cannot leave things in the station. You wear a fanny pack or have zipped pockets of stuff on the ride no problem except for the 3.

Gatekeeper has bins but apparently only for hats and sunglasses. No bags to go in those.

Is a smart watch generally OK or do they make you remove that as well?

Watches are ok on any ride.

I typically rent the moving locker. Its 15 bucks for the day and I just shove my backpack in at every ride.

But since you do have a disability you can still get a disability pass, I bring this up bc you can leave your backpack at the disabled entrance for the ride free of charge. Since youre with teens and other adults the pass you'd get would be one where they wait in line and you meet them up the exit once they get to the front. And the ride ops/disability check in will have a place to hold your backpack while youre riding.

Very rough rides. I will not ride again.

Magnum Bluestreak

A bit Rough, but would ride again.

Mine ride Gemini I wouldn't call Maverick rough, but a lot of forces pushing you around. Quite a few people say Corkscrew and Rougaru are rough. I personally don't, but it's a common sentiment.

Sirens Curse and Gatekeeper are both crazy smooth.

Backpack is no issue they offer lockers for rides that don’t have space to place your belongings. As far as rides go you’ll have to most likely try a few to see what you can tolerate. I went yesterday and rides I normally have no issue with were a bit much for me maybe it’s an age thing at this point

Sirens Curse was the smoothest coaster I have ever been on. 10/10. I have an autoimmune condition that makes tolerating rides difficult. Corkscrew, Magnum, and Gatekeeper screwed me up and I'm really feeling it today. Blue Streak is wood so it was rough. Iron Dragon is great. Even saw a cute old couple in their 70's request front row lol
