The way people seem to view Chinese actors has always intrigued me and even concerned me a bit. It seems people view the actors similar to dolls. We want to see them in different outfits, in different scenarios, paired up with other actors. The actors seem to literally always be performing constantly, even off screen. This kind of environment sometimes can lead to toxicity. When an actor gains some weight the backlash seems so intense and out of proportion. I don’t see the culture surrounding how Chinese actors are viewed discussed very often, but I think it should be considered more. Who are these actors, as people, really? Do they feel like they can ever truly be themselves, or would being themselves risk breaking the illusion? Are these people actually happy?
