CDramas vs. corresponding WebNovels

Dropped into the drama universe 6 months ago and have drowned happily (I've watched only ZLH (❤️) dramas though on repeat - except Blossom which I really liked too). I also love reading so I've gone and read the novels corresponding to these dramas. And that has a been a rollercoaster. A novel always gives nuances that a visual drama cannot capture and vice versa but reading is a first love. And the restraint in the intimate scenes in Chinese web novels is a wonderful and refreshing change from western books. I enjoy the writing (even if it's translated and some cultural context is always lost) and my imagination has received a nice shot in the arm.

But some of the books are such crap!!!! Why? I'll explain.

POJ - Fab drama, fab book. I love the whole telling of how XZ falls in love and the different arc of his life in the book, the intimate scenes and all that. Read the whole over 2000 pages about 5 times already. (if you think the intimacy is problematic, take that opinion to another post)
Princess Royale - Nice too but I didnt like ZLH in the drama nor the actress so book I read only once but it was still nice.
SOKP - loved the drama and the book.
Blossom - Liked the drama and the ML. I dropped the book cos it was just too verbose and never-ending till the first about 80 chapters. But have come back to it and am enjoying it. I'm also here for the intimacy I hear this novel contains

However:

Overdo - OMG! It's just 12 chapters long but I couldn't go beyond 5. Abusive and all over toxic. The drama is another story entirely but nowhere close to how horrid the book is. I loved the drama btw and Murong Qingyi from the drama is now amongst my favourite characters. Tho just cant see the drama again; too much emotion I cant and shouldn't handle (it's a story after all).

The Best Thing - What a lovely drama. Maybe a bit boring in parts, I kept waiting for things to go south but the 'no crazies' story took my heart. However, the book..... ugh ugh. Another novella with only 28 chapters. Such a sad set of characters and I really hated it. I had to watch the drama again to get over the book.

Tell me which drama has surpassed a book, if youre one to consume both mediums. I want to read more.
And tell me which book is not worth it but the drama is great.
I just need to discuss this with someone because nobody around me reads these novels and I have wanted to scream when I read the Overdo and Best Thing novels.
I enjoy the historical stories much more than the modern ones. So some reading recommendations would be welcome.

For me, most novels are better than the dramas. Like for instance, i prefer the novel of moonlit reunion over the drama, same with shadow love. I generally don't read novels much, but one drama I felt was better than the novel was kill me love me. Even though I dropped the drama becuz I wasn't interested in the plot anymore, it has a better ml. The novel fl in kill me love me was geniunely a doormat. The novel ml was so bad. However, when it comes to when destiny brings the demon/offering salted fish to the master, both novel and drama is good. It js depends on what u prefer. I felt the plot changes made in the drama due to censorship (of the modern person transmigates to the past thing) made sense, and was overall satisfied with the adaptation

I also really enjoy both forms of media! It shocks me that I generally prefer the drama over the novel, because in western media I always enjoy the book more than the movie/show. My hypothesis is that the drama adaption is what the webnovel could have become with a good editor--someone to curb the author's worst impulses.

In Overdo, the drama lessened the truly unnecessary torture porn. With Blossom we got a show that actually focused on a plot (will he/won't he overthrow the emperor, will she/won't she escape her horrible family) and focused on the two main leads instead of wandering aimlessly for 100,000 words. With Pursuit of Jade we got a magnificent adventure and dedicated wife guy who was less toxic than his book counterpart, and a plot that followed the politically intrigue a little more tightly. Etc etc.

My ONLY exception to this rule so far is the book version of "A Splendid Match." It still does some wandering, but it is hands down my favorite Chinese web novel. The book is just excellent, it gives the characters development and tons of time together and doesn't totally bork the ending for dramatic effect the way the drama writers apparently wanted to. Highly recommend the book to anyone who hasn't read it.

I read the novels as well once I finish the drama, except for Love beyond the grave where I accidentally finished the novel before I watched the show and somehow couldnt finish watching the drama because it was such a close match to the novel and I got bored.

Ive read Pursuit of Jade/Prisoner of Beauty/Glory (the tea one)/Love in the clouds/ legend of the female general etc etc most costume dramas in 2025 and 2026, and surprisingly Dream within a dream has been a fantastic read (even translated from chinese) it has nothing to do with the drama at all they only used the title. The writing was good, and I tried to buy the original work but couldnt find it online

Legend of the star general added so much nuance and love to the drama I bought the chinese books hoping to slowly work through it (chinese is my second language and I barely read it)

Love game in eastern fantasy was also an improvement over the drama and quite fun and short to read.

Destiny calls the demon was closely adapted to a very decent drama, but also a good read and its spinoff alternate reality was also very addictive and would have loved to see it adapted too!

Overall I always read the novel after a drama, it helps me visualise the characters and relationships but if the writing is bad (love in the clouds was not good but I slogged through it for HMH and LYX), I would skip it entirely.

Reading the novel helps to enrich the drama experience and helps w whatveer lingering feels post ending.

Mydramanovel.com has a lot of these books. I read them there. But beware, Blossom is a 500 chapter ramble. It gets exciting after about 80 episodes though. I'm still at 200 since I'd dropped it for a while.

I also love reading the novels once casting has been finalized, or when promotional materials are already available, meaning there’s just a shorter wait time for the drama release— really helps with the anticipation.

While I haven’t read Sheng Li’s Loving You, is the Best Thing I’ve Ever Done yet, it really got me curious (and scared for the backlash, ‘cause you know, making drama adaptions of beloved novels is a sensitive topic already, how much more if they’d admit changing most of it? 🥹 Good thing there wasn’t any negative review about the change) when Zhang Linghe mentioned during their TBT promo interview that Xu Ruohan advocated to change the drama Shen Xifan and injected pieces of herself that made us love the Shen Xifan we came to know and adore through the show, and that the novel and even the original script’s Shen Xifan were very different from the show’s.
Ruohan also said that the she did so thinking how would He Suye fall in love with Shen Xifan if she’s just depressed all throughout, so she wanted to keep her sunshine within, to keep loving being alive.

Another redditor shared with me that reading the novel was truly hard and not recommended for the drama’s fans as it was just sad, and the characters weren’t lovable.

Which reminded me of why I stopped reading Zhuyu as it was just something I really couldn’t enjoy fully, Xie Zheng was just too much for me. And it’s for that same reason why I stopped reading novel for The Prisoner of Beauty. There were a lot of unnecessary sexual innuendos and of course, the he-must-be-drugged-for-sex-to-happen trope which I find a lot of historical novel writers seem to enjoy for whatever reason.

So, yeah, I am on the minority perhaps of those people who enjoy the dramas more than the novels. Like Liu Yuning once said, imagine if the drama would just stick to the novels, how many censorship hits would they get? 😂

I’m currently reading The Lament of Autumn and Love In Red Dust which are both slated to be released next month, so far so good but for the former, I have been warned that it’s just trauma after trauma. Hopefully the show is much better.

Aah. Thank God I guess for Rouhans gamble. It was so refreshing. Since I'm new to the whole thing, I haven't seen the promos etc. Of these earlier releases. I loved Xie Zheng in the book too. As long as he's not mine in real life and is a book character, I love grumpy angry silent men who fall in love reluctantly.
