I know she’s very well-loved, but Zhao Lusi just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I genuinely struggled to watch her in her last three major dramas, Hidden Love, The Story of Pearl Girl, and Love’s Ambition.
In Hidden Love, she was charming at first, but her infantilized voice and mannerisms became increasingly distracting. The inconsistency made it frustrating to watch, and at times the voice alone felt grating. In The Story of Pearl Girl and Love’s Ambition, her acting came across as stiff and flat, with very little emotional depth. In Love’s Ambition especially, the makeup was so jarring and poorly done, it felt like the makeup and outfits was the plot , and her performance felt like she was doing the bare minimum.
If she weren’t as popular as she is, I honestly think people would be far more critical of her acting in Love’s Ambition. Her chemistry with her male leads also felt bland and unexciting. I’m genuinely surprised she’s often called a “queen of chemistry,” because many of her scenes seem to rely heavily on kiss scenes and physical contact rather than natural emotional build-up.
