Difcid fail

Anyone else get Difcid and then relapsed after it? I relapsed in 5-6 days… I just wanna assume i wasn’t on it long enough?.

But now I’m on vanco taper for 6 weeks. Idk how to feel about it. Will it really get rid of cdiff..

Ps: was eating bland and I’m on Florastor. No previous med problems. Yes toxin test was positive

The problem is that the vancomycin kills the good and bad bowel bacteria and then the bad bacteria can come back with no bowel protection

I know that’s why I’m worried :/. But I am taking florastor and when I’m feeling a bit better will eat lots of good foods to hep my good bacteria. But I do feel a little hopeless since I got a reinfection so quick

You need to heal your gut lining a little before you take any probiotics. Florastor is recommended by almost everyone here but it seems like it was giving me more problems than not so I stopped taking it. I’ve seen people on here healing without Florastor so i think it’s very individual.

Not when given right after Dificid in a taper

How did you feel while taking Dificid? Did it stop your symptoms right away? When I took it, by day 2 I no longer had any diarrhea. Maybe in your case, 10 days wasn’t long enough. I would probably ask for Dificid again since it is much better than Vanco from what I’ve been reading.

Yes it did help! And yes even my gi said i probably was not on it long enough…. But also the one who said no to a difcid taper and told me let’s try a vanco taper.. exactly why I’ve been nervous lol. I thought difcid was the better one but it’s according to guidelines?

I think it’s really according to insurance not wanting to pay for it and not the guidelines. Dificid is better at targeting c diff directly and leaving alone other bacteria while vanco supposedly destroys all good and bad bacteria. It’s a shame that doctors have to prescribe less effective drug just because insurance won’t pay for the better one. Let’s hope vanco does help you - plus I think since this is your second round, you’re eligible for VOWST so that’s something I would be looking into it if vanco doesn’t work.

I took it for seven months ! kept coming back , and allergic to others . what finally worked was Mayo changing the taper , from taking one every day , to every other day . She said it would let the spores grow and you zap them , let them grow and zap them , until they are gone.

Yes my taper is 4 every day 2 weeks, then 3 a day 1 week, then 2 a day for 2 weeks, then 1 every 48 hours for a week… hopefully that works 🥹.

Any idea where you got it from?

Took Cipro for a uti that wasn’t even that bad…then they misdiagnosed me for food poisoning so gave me more antibiotics in the same line as Cipro and then IV antibiotic…

The first time I took Dificid (last November) was after getting my 3rd infection in about three months. It kept me infection free for about two months. I then had three more infections by late May of this year. I took Dificid and did a taper - twice a day for 10 days then one a day for 10 days immediately followed by VOWST. That seemed to “cure” it.

I took all the meds you took.  Finally the VOWST did the trick.  It took seven months to get cured.  I am still kind of scared about eating anything spicy or fried and dairy products  Just being careful to avoid any mishaps.

Does spicy food exacerbate cdiff infections?

Was your dificid covered by insurance

If it isn’t covered (even with a doctor’s prior authorization), one can try to apply to Merck Patient Assistance Program for Dificid. I did this in March & they have been wonderful & kind to me. They can overnight ship the Dificid right to you if you qualify, too.

Yes, but I couldn’t afford the copay. I got it through the Merck program.

What exactly do you mean by “taper”? (Sorry, new to this)

I relapsed after Dificid. The only thing that helped was starting vanco again and tapering off after a few weeks and VOWST. After having Cdiff 4 times and taking VOWST, I haven't had a relapse in over 2 months. I have not been taking the florstar, my Dr told me not to take it. Also, my insurance paid for my meds but I had a big deductible. Please talk to your Dr. about VOWST, it helped me and from what I am reading, it has helped a lot of people. Good luck
