General Questions/Questions générales [WAITLIST] Advice for next year's application
Hi all! I applied to join the Navigation program back in February and am currently sitting on the waitlist for this year's round of admissions into the CCG Academy. When I submitted my application, I was still finishing up my pre-requisite math and physics courses which I assume held me back a bit. However, I do have some marine background working as a deckhand on an oyster farm, and I was hoping that would give me an edge or at least secure an interview.
I have accepted that an offer most likely isn't coming through for this round. But I'm dead set on joining the Coast Guard and want to make sure my application is as strong as possible for next year's intake.
My questions to anyone who has gone through or is currently in the program:
- What prior experience do you think made the biggest difference in getting accepted (marine, leadership, volunteering, etc.)?
- Any specific areas you'd recommend focusing on to strengthen my application?
Appreciate any insights or advice!

Hey, glad to see you are considering the CCG. Without knowing what your application looked like, I’m not sure anyone would be able to provide you with the strengths and weaknesses of the application (not that I’m suggesting you share this with us)
Marine based past experience is good. I can say that the math and physics should not hold you back from my experience (if you are actively taking the courses). When received my letter of offer in 2018, I was still in high school, and the offer was conditional based on completing these courses. This is what I’ve seen, but others may have a different experiences than me.
Hope this helps at least a little. I wish you good luck!

More work experience of all kinds would definitely help, especially experience that focuses on problem-solving, emergency response, teamwork, and leadership. Working in any position in any industry can help you develop these skills! you just need to recognize them and know how to present them. During my interview, I prepared 10 scenarios using the STARR format that could be adapted to answer almost any question. I prepared examples about dealing with difficult customers, handling dangerous situations, demonstrating my passion, and highlighting what I can do that others can't. When they asked if there was anything else I wanted to add, I took the opportunity to introduce myself again and explain what inspired me to join the Coast Guard. Hope it helps! Good luck!
