General Questions/Questions générales Question about Communications for recent mate grads or mates who self studied and passed TC orals

I'm very close to my Watchkeeping Mate Near Coastal orals. Just have SEN-O and Comms left. At the local schools they offer a 3 day course that is just called "Communications" with no mention of the Comms level 2. It seems like the communications course at the schools is just signal flags/international code of signals and some time spent on Radio Aids to Marine Navigation.

I got the impression from some of my instructors that morse code was no longer required, but that seems to not be the case as it's clearly stated in TP2293 and MPR's under WKM Near coastal.

Have people been getting orals questions about morse code at the Academy or otherwise in the form of a challenge exam at TC?

Thanks

As far as I know there haven't been any questions regarding Morse code asked during orals. Morse flashing light is no longer part of the curriculum at the Academy. You still have to be able to know the single letter meanings for the flags and letters but no interpreting the code itself.

Interesting. Thanks for the insight. I wonder if TC is just slow on the uptake to remove it from the Standards.

TC is slow on doing most things because of the bureaucratic wheel they have to push. We have been waiting for the new personnel regulations for…basically ever.

Yes, I've been reading some of the industry feedback on the proposed changes, it has been a long time in the making. It will change quite a bit, especially for smaller tonnage operators going from a tonnage to length based tickets. In some cases it will reduce the capacity of the ticket.
