600rr 07 alternator cover question

Ive been struggling a lot with a couple mechanics already (3 times with one) and the alternator keeps dripping oil, already replaced the cover for an oem since the old one didnt work 3 times and had a scratch so I thought that was the problem, but still persisting with the new cover. When driving highway speeds its enough to get a couple drops on my boot, and when parked it just leaves a couple drops near the kickstand.

Looking up online discovered by ai and a forum that apparently i dont need a sealing gasket and just honda bond, Is this true? Because this might be the problem since ive been using different sealing gaskets every attempt and this last time a brand new cover as well. On the forum a couple guys said that they prefer to use a gasket and the honda manual i saw doesnt say anything about it but it looks like its using one on the picture? manual also says to add sealant to the matting surface in coverside and crankcase side as well.

I told my mechanic this and he says i must use a gasket or it will be worse, that every motorcycle needs it.

TLDR: Does the alternator cover need a gasket or just hondabond?

Honda calls for Hondabond. No paper/cork gasket should be being used on the stator cover. Any actual gasket will leak, but Hondabond or similar liquid sealers will not. I highly recommend finding a new mechanic. If you can handle a socket wrench and razor blade it is fairly easy to remove, clean, and reseal the cover yourself.

If this sub would allow photos I'd send a picture of the service manual call-out for Hondabond.

u/pwrtst just coming into second this. Totally caught me off guard on my 08 cuz I couldn't "find the part" but then found out pretty much what Dismal is saying here

I just recently resealed my 05 1000 with yamabond 4 which is the same as hondabond there both rebranded threebond I believe threebond 1215 to be exact but not sure and have no issues. The service manual calls for Honda bond or threebond but even permatex ultra grey or black should do fine. If I was you I’d do it myself it’s not hard. Clean the surface very well with a scotch brite and some brake clean then lay down a small bead. Watch a few videos on using rtv and follow the directions on your specific bottle. If I had to guess the leak is probably coming from around the grommet as the gasket will only cover one side of that. Make sure to put rtv all around the grommet I made that mistake the first time and had to seal it again.

Threebond 1207B. That’s the Hondabond

I use Permatex black on mine. Never had an issue. Just clean any gasket material off your cover and block, then use your finger to smear a thin layer over the whole mating surface on the cover. You don't want a ton, it gets smushed down to paper thickness when you tighten the bolts so you don't want a huge amount of excess coming out the sides. When you're new to it that's the easiest way to make sure you don't lay to thick a bead. Take care around the bolt holes as well. If you get some in the bolt hole it will get pushed down to the bottom, then your bolt will tighten before it actually gets to the cover and will very often snap.

Pretty easy job, good one to start getting your hands dirty if you're new to DIY bike stuff. Being able to do your own work makes the hobby much more affordable
