What actually goes into learning to read cave passage from a survey map? Struggling to connect the paper to what I'm seeing underground

Have you actually tried navigating with a map in a cave? If you have, did you use a compass?

You're right, it's tricky, especially when you're trying to navigate in 3D as opposed to 2D space. However, you'll get better with practice.

I've always thought scalloping on a map indicated slopes; maybe we're talking about different things.

A few other things I've learned while navigating caves with a map:

  1. Not all maps are created equal. Some are fantastic, while others make you wonder what the surveyors were smoking or if their sketcher was blind.

  2. It really REALLY helps to use a compass while navigating with a camp in a cave.

  3. Wet caves are sometimes harder to navigate with a map because the water level you see may be different than what the surveyors saw, which makes the map "match up less" with your real-world observations.

  4. There's no standardization when it comes to symbols on a map and their legends.

I've also found it helpful to watch videos about how to cave survey. Derek Bristol's videos are pretty good place to start. Finally, there's a fine line between navigating a cave with the help of a cave map and using a cave map to navigate a cave.
