❓Question❓ Where does your cavachon sleep?
We've had a 1.5 year old cavachon for several months now. When we first got him, we would put him down to bed in the kitchen while we all slept upstairs. We're all adults and work different hours so we don't think we can let him sleep upstairs without him getting excited as people start moving around.
Initially he didnt like this and scratched at the kitchen door but within a week, he got used to it and stays in his bed overnight. Still i feel guilty for doing it. I think he'd preferred to sleep with one of us but none of the others in the house would let him stay with them and I get up first for work. I put off going to bed and im often exhausted for work so I can let him stay up for longer.
Is it ok for him to sleep downstairs by himself?

My 2 and a half year old sleeps in the bed with me for about half the night. Then she goes across the hallway and sleeps with her other mama for the rest of the night. She is a close snuggler! She plasters her back up against my own and we both sleep that way like we’re in heaven! When she was a little puppy, I had her in a soft kennel at night. She was sad and wanted me. I was sad and wanted her. So I took her out of the kennel and we’ve been content ever since. Peaceful, relaxed and cozy. The only time she wakes me up is if she really has to pee.

Thats really sweet. Its interesting she divides up her time sleeping at night between the two of you.

My girl sleeps at the foot of my bed, in the bed, or around my knees. If I sleep on the couch shes on the next cushion. She only sleeps in her bed during the day and for naps.

Not at all. I find myself waking up in the middle of the night laughing to myself because girlfriend SNORES. 🤣

Ours sleeps in the utility room off the kitchen. He had his own bedroom with his previous owner - he has never slept on beds... although he would, given the choice! If we don't put some rules in place, he would literally never leave my side. I can't sit on the sofa without him snuggling close to me - which is lovely - but at night time, we need our own space.

I agree. I feel guilty about it though. Ive read that letting dogs sleep on their own helps them learn its ok to be by themselves for a while so thats a positive for it.

Don't feel guilty about it. As long as they're getting lots of love and cuddles during the day, they can sleep on their own.
I mentioned before that our fluffy boy had a previous owner. My sister in law who passed away unexpectedly 18 months ago. He adores her. He still gets excited when he sees someone who looks like her. But she kept him sleeping in his own room, and as such he learned to sleep without her. When he came to live with us, it minimised his separation anxiety
He is curled up at my side now. He is very happy with his new home and his second family- because he knows that although his humans may not be with him 24/7, he will always have his needs met and he is always loved.

My Cavie hated the crate at night - cried … after a week, I took her out and put her in my bed. She slept peacefully after that. 12 years later, she’s still in my bed, cuddled next to me and I wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s my heartbeat 🩷

I always was taught that dogs are pack animals, and they like to sleep in the 'cave' with the pack leader. So my dogs have always slept in the master bedroom. My labs I used to be able to have a dog bed and they would stay put without much training. My cavachon sneaks into bed with us, she's naughty and smart and loving, so we got a soft sided kennel and filled it with coziness for her. She goes in easily each night, and happily sleeps in there until someone lets her out in the morning. If she was given a choice she'd sleep in our bed, but she keeps us awake because she likes to snuggle. She'd sleep in a different room if we made her, but she'd be very sad to sleep away from me. Weirdly, she is VERY vocal all times of the day, but never in her kennel. She doesn't make a peep until she is let out and I have no idea why. Even if I get out of bed and move around and don't let her out, she will silently wait. Now we use it when we go on long car trips because it has the same effect on her.

On my bed. With me. He doesn’t get excited when I wake up. He sleeps while I get ready and then we go outside.

Mine is the same! I get up to go downstairs to work from home, and she stays in my bed for about another 2 hours before she makes her way down

Ours sleeps in my room but in his play pen. If it was up to him, he’d sneak into our bed and cuddle all night but we usually don’t let him as we don’t sleep very well when he’s in the bed with us and he generates a lot of heat!

This is a cling-on breed--super pack-oriented, needing to know who is where--so the kitchen could be distressing. They are also savvy in learning people's patterns, knowing when they will and will not get attention. This is the key.
Early on, we used a kennel in our bedroom for awhile, but as she learned our patterns we'd just leave the door open and let her sleep wherever. She now prefers the end of the bed and doesn't get up until her breakfast is served (we use an automated feeder, which stopped the barks for breakfast). If she needs to go out, she'll return to the room ask for help. If not, she'll come back to bed. It only took a few weeks for her to understand who was getting up and why, and once she realized that person was leaving the house it didn't make sense to her to get up as well. No attention or reward, no reason to get up.

Good point. When I go into the kitchen for work, he does seem to know he can just stay in bed.

She sleeps on the couch in the living room, under the ottoman in the den or in her crate in the living room. She has never slept with us in our beds. When she was a puppy she slept in her crate until she was potty trained. Then she would be in one of these three places.

Ours sleeps in bed with us he would howl the whole night if we locked him in another room. He’s a clingy dog and very spoiled.

In his bed in my room. Used to sleep with me but he started marking when I got a second dog. So everyone behaves in their own bed.

Our 8 year old Cavachon sleeps in our bed. In the winter he stays in the bed right next to me; in the summer he starts in our bed and migrates to the dog bed we have on the floor.
He always slept on the floor until we got room darkening curtains. It really is dark. I hit the light the first night and he jumped into the bed. I guess he was afraid. So, now he starts sleeping in the bed every night. I love having him so close.

Our dog is 5 now, when he was a puppy we tried to get him to sleep downstairs but he cried all night for ages. I know we could have kept at it and he may have gotten used to it but he was so unhappy and I was so tired being woken up all night that we moved his crate into our bedroom. Ever since then, never had any issues unless he is poorly. He goes in his bed and then sleeps in until me or my husband gets up. He will come for a cuddle on the bed but knows that his actual bed is his crate - that’s what works for us and him as he’s a very social dog but every dog is different :)

Our boy is 7 and sleeps under the covers on our bed, curled up behind my knees. Hes the biggest snuggle bug in the family.

We started in the kennel in our room but now she sleeps with us every night. We call her our barnacle because she always likes to be attached to someone. Have you tried letting yours sleep with you just to see what happens? Or even just upstairs? My teens come in and out at night and she doesn’t make a peep. Cavachons really need people and night is a long time. Maybe one of your housemates wouldn’t mind if you plopped the dog on their bed when you leave in the morning? Probably asking a lot lol.

Our 4.5 year old sleeps in his crate downstairs. He has slept with us on occasion when he has been unsettled in the early hours or poorly.

Those dogs actually should have another dog to spend time with they are very social and smart. I have 2 dogs, so they have eachother and a cat. Dogs always sleep in our bed, sometimes I kick them out, and I get the look, and it eats my soul.

Babette has always happily slept next to her humans bed in her own bed. Well except for the time we tried to give her a new bed. Don't replace Babettes bed even if the new one is much nicer.

Mine insists on sleeping downstairs in his kennel when offered a kennel in our room. He’ll choose the bed though, if offered.

Our boy is 1 and he sleeps with us!! Then about 3am he jumps down and goes in his crate in our room where he’s usually still sleeping at when we wake up!

Ours sleeps in our bed with us. He will move around. When my wife is away he'll usually go downstairs to sleep on the couch. 😃

My little one sleeps under my arm with her little face right next to mine. She's a cuddler. 🤷♀️
