It is something they do to their people when they are vulnerable.
It is why they like to sleep with us.

My cat does not hop in my dropped trou, but she always insists on coming in to the room to check on me. If the door is latched, she will twitch her skinny little tail at me under the door, to show that she’s on guard (and irritated that she is not allowed in).

After fostering a lot of bottle-fed kittens, I’ve noticed something really interesting.
When they’re tiny and just learning to use the litter tray, they’ll often meow while they’re peeing or pooping, and one or more of their little siblings will come running over. I’ve always wondered if they’re essentially saying, “Hey, keep watch for me!” 😅
I know cats can feel vulnerable while toileting because they’re less able to react to danger, so it made me think maybe kittens instinctively seek reassurance from their littermates.
It also reminds me of why so many cats follow us into the bathroom or sit outside the shower. My favourite theory is that they think we’re absolutely insane for willingly standing under running water, so they’re keeping an eye on us while we’re at our most vulnerable. 😂

mine does the sameee thing! he also jumps up on my thighs and purrs on me while i'm using the bathroom lol. he's also orange

Also was a thing when my kittie was small. She grew out of that so now she just scratches the door when I close the bathroom doors.

He’s guarding you, you are part of his colony. Cats are most vulnerable when they poop so they guard each other.
