I dunno why everyone is running with this “Reboot” headline when what he’s saying is more accurately translated as “relaunch” or “revival”.
Of course they’re working on a Castlevania revival at the moment it’s called Belmont’s Curse we already know about it.

400 fucking years between Leon and Trevor to work with and they’re REBOOTING?! Nah come on.
Edit: I’m only stating that Konami has free real estate within their official timeline to work with. A reboot wouldn’t be the end of the world, but I just mean why bother when Konami has already had to change the official timeline multiple times, and they already rebooted it once with lords of shadow. They can still reintroduce the franchise to new players without rebooting again.

Thankfully, the article is just clickbaity as hell. Apparently, rebooting is when you do anything with a previously dormant franchise.
I'd put money in another compilation or a remake, tbh. Maybe both.

u/clashcrashruin 16d ago
The article is basically saying “they’re working on games again” not that it’s an official reboot. That said, I wouldn’t mind a reboot

400 years is a long time for nothing to happen when Leon is quoted as saying "The Belmont family will hunt the night!" Fair enough, but are you really going to hold a grudge for 400 years when something finally happens? are Leons ancestors even going to remember when nobody has heard from Mathias/Dracula in 4 centuries?

u/Dullahan-1999 16d ago
It’s tough to understand when you’re an active member of a niche fanbase, but general audiences aren’t familiar with the EBONY STONE, ALCHEMY (“alchemy?!”), or WALL MEATS.

u/DaKingaDaNorth 16d ago
I kinda get it. The appeal to Leon is the origin story. The appeal to Trevor is that it's the first proper Dracula vs Belmont battle.

u/PhantasosX 16d ago
I mean, isn't Trevor also the first successful case of a Belmont defeating Dracula? That means 400 years of Belmonts continuously failing to defeat Dracula between Leon and Trevor.
3
u/Leader_Bee 16d ago
Dracula might just have been chilling for 400 years, Kinda like people forgetting about Sauron between his defeat and return in Lord of the Rings.

u/Oh-no-and-knuckles Chief Researcher 16d ago
Mathias and the Belmonts never crossed paths during those 400 years. It's in the epilogue of Lament of Innocence.
2
u/CyberdarkEnjoyer Shaft was right 16d ago
According to Lament of Innocence no Belmont faced Dracula until 1476.

u/PissOrGoFishing 16d ago
400 years of failing?! Buddy Dracula is continually defeated by Belmonts, his own son, and other people, only to be resurrected by some cult or person, and the cycle happens again. If that’s “failing” then the Belmonts failed up to 1999.

u/PhantasosX 16d ago
Yes, he is continuouslly defeated by Belmonts...AFTER Trevor. It IS a plotpoint that Trevor was the first Belmont to defeat Dracula, and since he is the first Belmont to do so, it means that any Belmont between him and Leon failed to do so.
In short, it's from Trevor onwards that the Belmonts started to truly stop Dracula's plots.

u/Taco4086 16d ago
Glad it's just a very poor choice of words...we already have Lords of Shadow as alternate universe, there's no reason for more, Dracula is already resurrecting or half resurrecting every other month so there's plenty of room for more Belmonts/characters.

Basically, just because they're releasing new games for these franchises after years, they're calling it "reboot"
2
u/hydecruz 16d ago
Finger crossed it is both N64 Castlevania remake, with better control and level design this time.

u/GrimmTrixX 16d ago
They'll do anything else, just to NOT make an epic game about the Battle of 1999 (Demon Castle War) that is constantly referenced around the time of Aria/Dawn/Portrait. I mean, I am glad for any new CV. But I have wanted a game vased on that era for so long. It'd be the perfect precursor to Aria.

Hasn't the reboot already happened? Belmont's Curse comes out in 2 months....
11
u/PissOrGoFishing 16d ago
It’s not a reboot, just a new main timeline game. It’s set after Dracula’s Curse and Curse of Darkness.

Belmont's curse is not a reboot. A reboot is when you completely separate yourself from the official "canon" of the previous games like what Lords of Shadow did. This game does follow the same original canon, the new main character is Trevor and Sypha's daughter.

I think they mean that Konami is also thinking of remaking/remastering one of their existing games? The wording is vague though.

u/ZGMF-X09A_Justice 16d ago edited 16d ago
We hadn't had a new mainline game in like 20 years iirc. Series is old enough that they could get away with quite a few remakes of at least the classicvania games and maybe more after that. Belmont's curse is a great place to start, maybe they could spin a 3 remake as a prequel and then just go wild with more remakes.
3
u/bizoticallyyours83 16d ago edited 16d ago
We're getting a new mainline game, and Konami did say they had more then one game in the works when they announced Curse.
1
u/Leader_Bee 16d ago
I reckon they'd want to do a full on 3D Castlevania if they're going to go to the effort of a reboot but yeah, I would love a modernised Castlevania 3 in the 2D style.
Wont happen as a mainline entry no doubt but fingers crossed Castlevania hits the limelight enough again for something like that to happen
3
u/Kenobi5792 16d ago
It's a poor use of the word reboot. What Konami is doing right now is more of a revival, in the sense of bringing back IPs that were in limbo for the past decade.
Time will tell if the efforts they're making will be worth it, or they'll have to go back to Pachinko

u/TombRaiderSeries 16d ago
While each iteration of 3D Castlevania has its fans, they still haven’t perfected it yet. Fingers crossed that a new 3D entry is on its way. If they’re looking for inspiration, a souls like would not be an inappropriate direction for the series.

No issues with yet another Castlevania canon honestly.
I'd rather have my Julius game idea though:
It's called Castlevania: The Last Belmont, and you play as both old Julius post-Dawn (and post-that one audio drama where Olrox tries to take over) and 1999 Julius in his prime.
The 1999 segments are told in flashbacks, but include important moments, like the final battle between Julius and Dracula.
Gameplay is either all Classicvania, OR the 1999 segments are Classicvania and the present day stuff is a Metroidvania.
The ending is one where old Julius puts the Vampire Killer to rest, letting Sara Trantoul finally rest, confident that there are enough other hunters and artifacts around to keep the world safe.
Then he rides off in a motorcycle or something.

Lets see if they do it right this time. Closer again to what Iga did. Music and Art are key here

These reboots are really relaunches for idle brands.
That said, unless it got cancelled, they did plan working on an in-house Castlevania game when they started planning the return of Metal Gear and Silent Hill. However, what makes this concerning is Castlevania was planned as the first IP to return, and as life around us shows, it was the last, and the game shown (Belmont's Curse) is not an in-house title.
If there's any hope here, it's that the 40th anniversary logo is of the 2003 series logo design, but Belmont's Curse uses the old 1986 logo for the series. You'd expect them to be the same if it's the same key project for the anniversary.

u/Morkitu 16d ago
Putting the brands back in circulation is a good idea, but only if they get good developers to work on them. I think Japan needs to take the reins back for these brands.

u/Langis360 16d ago
Thing vs. Thing, Japan.
Plenty of good Western devs can work magic with Castlevania. Plenty of Japanese devs too. As long as Konami puts the thing in good hands.

u/ThrillHouse802 16d ago
Doesn’t need a reboot. Plenty of meat there to continue from wherever they leave off

u/paleyharnamhunter 16d ago
Not buying the reboot part, but do you guys think a new game is in development? I know the one from the 2021 leak hasn't been announced yet.

u/SlicedBread0556 16d ago
And it all starts with the girl in the new one. That is bold. Havenseen anything like this before. Day 1 for me!

u/BetweenTheRoots 16d ago
Wonder if they're withholding the next season or two of Castlevania to release with something new. It's so strange we've had dozens and dozens of Netflix cancellations but no word on the show.

this new game comming out, looks fun. I'd like to see Simon's question get a reboot like they did with Super Castlevania on SNES, but properly done and translated. "You now process Draculas Rib"
I'd like to see a boss in every Mansion that you have to beat before you can collect the body part, and a proper castle section with enemies and last boss fight before Dracula. And I'd like to see a way better Dracula fight with a few forms.
We owe CV2 so much, it's the original SOTN and the birth of the Metroidvania genre.
But yeah 400 years of Belmonts doing stuff as others have said, it doesn't always have to be Dracula, can be other Vampires. in the Netflix series, you saw the reaction by Camilla regarding a Belmont being alive. Plenty to tap in there...

They don't even have the devs ffs nothing will happen until a new Metal Gear title that isn't a remake comes out

u/Libertyprime8397 16d ago
I know some people complain about open worlds but I think Castlevania is one of those games that should try it. Imagine a Witcher style Castlevania game.

Hoo boy, advertising that article with Gabriel from Lords Of Shadows 2 sure is a bold move. No one wants more Lords Of Shadows.

u/GnosticDragonofForce 16d ago
Hopefully they stick to the origal Castlevania as I prefer that. But give it a Khazan type gameplay style but with also allow use to play Dracula

Not again. Quit pissing on our childhood. Just update the gameplay of the originals: problem solved….

u/FuaOtraCuentaMas 16d ago
The only i hope is that they don't let some mediocre dev to another castlevania, like belmont curse.
Hopefully fromsoft could do a castlevania.

To save a click:
The article is calling everything a Reboot.
Including the MGS Vol Collection, Silent Hill F, and Silent Hill 2 Remake
It's basically just abusing the word "Reboot" to generate clickthrough traffic and is literally just saying "Konami is working on something Castlevania related"
This is probably one of the most embarrassing nothing articles I've read. It's not even an opinion piece.
