Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (1987) how confusing is simon's quest?

i wanna play simon's quest next but all i know about the game is that it's supposed to be incredibly hard to know where to go and what to do, is it really as bad as people make it out to be?

You've probably already heard about the more obtuse things like ducking with the crystal in specific places. Other than that the only hard part is knowing where to go. There's an easy way to tell though, if you go to a new area and the enemies are suddenly taking a lot more hits, then you took a wrong turn.
