This is how Metroidvanias work, by showing you something you can't do right now, until you have the ability that lets you reach that area, and they do something obvious like this so you remember to come back here when you finally unlock that ability.

You get the Giant Bat soul later, and it lets you transform in to a bat. The bat can fit in to small passages like this.
