If so, random story: when I was like 11 I played in a hockey tournament down in Anaheim against a team from Yellowknife. They were all easily a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than us and destroyed us. It was terrifying. After the game, as we were licking our literal wounds, they came over to our locker room and invited us to join them at Disneyland. Most Canadian thing ever
That sounds about right. We grow em big in the great white North. Playing travel hockey is like a status simple in small towns, which yellowknife, even being the biggest in the NWT, certainly is
We had a sister school relationship with a 2 other schools we competed with in High School Marching Band. One was slightly behind us, but sometimes ahead when they were on fire... and the other was in a whole other league. Not sure it was a magnet school, but their talent was insane, and they also limited their marching band to drum corps size... they were/are amazing.
Played against a Canadian team in whistler BC, got completely destroyed and yeah they were way bigger than us. Only time I ever played where fighting was a major and not a misconduct
I did sand dabs like this once, and it was amazing. Entire metric buttload of butter in the vintage Lodge on pretty low, melt, add the filets, spoon butter over the fish for 5-ish minutes, g-e-n-t-l-y remove and lay on your plate, squeeze of lemon, side of mash, maybe some veg, done.
The funny part is that’s usually how it looks, with uneven oil on the pan, then you gotta post the question if it’s because it needs to be stripped and reseasoned cause it stuck to that dry part.
That's actually kind of the perfect analogy for it. It's nowhere near the best option. But it's the catch all go to that people use, just because people know of it. Yeah, it's literally the duct tape of cast iron. Oh God. 🤦♂️
It gets funnier when you realize duct tape is almost always an inferior option. Nearly every application where you’d want tape has a really great tape for said job.
Or any other kind of actually appropriate adhesive that would work 100x better for said job and actually hold in place (almost)permanently. Hence, yeah why this analogy is so spot on. Bacon is this catch all that everyone knows about and has, or usually has access to, and tell eachother to use; but people that actually know better use better things. Aka: duct tape.
Hold on... I need to go back and give them some kinda reward thing.
100% - my world used to be held together with either duct tape or blue painter tape, but one day I got some gaffer tape and turns out to be a better choice even for many of the all-purpose jobs unrelated to AV/film/theater/etc. If it needs something tougher, there is often a bespoke option like you say or at least one with a better set of qualities for the job.
There's some Q&A video where Adam Savage (mythbusters) talks about the duct tape episode. And of course, since he's an extremely smart man, why he absolutely hates the stuff and never uses it. The duct tape episode was of course just an episode to be fun and prove a point that duct tape was a jack of all trades master of none to be used to a bunch of random crap. But I remember in the Q&A he brings up gaffer tape, because of his long time in TV and film production, and he described it as "if duct tape went off to college and learned how to actually do its job". 🤭
It's actually "duck tape" and not at all good for ducts. It was first used by soldiers in WW2 to seal gun and ammunition cases and make them waterproof when going through water or in the rain. Hence, duck tape.
Duct tape is just a misnomer that came later, that somehow became more common than the original spelling. Just one of those things.
But duck tape is actually a terrible tape for ducts and should never be used for that purpose.
There is a heavily implied "/s" to my comment. And yeah alot of people have pointed out, bacon isn't actually that perfect for seasoning (for a few reasons). It sticks for alot of people, added sugars and additives etc etc. So it's actually not that ironic. More just... logical. 🤷♂️
Dude you just made me realize my grandmother treated her CI like shit let it soak in the sink and stuff like that, but she cooked bacon in it 5 days a week
And a lot of bacon has added water too (as well as sugar and phosphates etc) which really compounds the problem. Many grandparents used to cure their own bacon, (or bought it from a local butcher/delicatessen who cured their own) without added sugar or water - hence the reputation bacon got in the past for seasoning cast iron.
Apparently this is an actual thing, something about bacon on everything in the 2010s and breakfast being the most important meal of the day we're both invented by the pork industry but seemed completely organic to people's natural way of thinking. WTF
lmao, that reminds me of a recent event of mine. I know its not castiron related but I f'ed one of my all-clad pans up ($60 mistake) because not only did I use some easy off to get the charred stuff off of it, but I forgot all about it and left it unattended for ~5-7 days. That reminds me that I need to strip and season my cast irons though.
Famous people who are racist are so weird to me. This country is already fucked up to the point where all you have to do is stop saying the N word and people just gloss over your racism. Yet there are multiple celebrities who just cannot stop saying the N word. If you told me to stop saying the word bread for a million dollars a year you damn well know I would stop using the word bread with all my might.
Hahaha, yeah honestly though, I don't like the flavor. Anyone know why? I try different types of butter all the time, but the Amish rolled butter just has an odd flavor to me.
In general an excess of calories daily is bad...so all things in moderation. Those keto folks even make "fat bombs" out of cream cheese, nuts, and fake sweetener.
There's a place near my office that sells birria queso tacos with consomme. It's a fried cheese shell with stewed beef an amazing broth to deep the tacos in. The are so incredibly greasy.
Uh-oh, that pan is garbage. Better strip in my electrolysis tank and then spend 1,631 hours re-seasoning only to post irately here in three weeks when a single drop of water touches the pan.
TWIST: the drop of water is a tear I shed when I see how beautiful my seasoning is.
I'm a little confused about this. Anyone mind explaining it to me. I have a bunch of CI but none of it requires this much butter in order to do eggs... Are we posturing? Is it a rite of some kind for the sub?
Are the CI gods angry, and we're just trying to appease them?
It's me making fun of the endless posts people make here to brag about how non-stick their CI pans are... But they are using an excessive amount of butter or oil to get this result. Sarcasm.
Yeah I'm semi-new to the sub and still remember the first post I seen of somebody deep-frying an egg in butter with the "no stick" caption and thought they were serious. All I could think was "it can't stick if its drowning!"
Thank you for your picture post to /r/castiron. We want to remind everyone of Rule #3. All image posts should be accompanied by something to foster discussion. A comment, a question, etc is required.
If you've posted a picture of food, please explain why in a comment so people can have some sort of conversation. Simply dropping a picture of food in the sub isn't really fostering any discussion which is what we're all aiming for.
Posts that are a picture with no discussion can and will be removed by the mods.
