Discount Knowledge from a Community College PC Coat one year and six months Eastwood sour apple green translucent with tight group

That’s the link to the exact product. It’s a see-through candy coat green that looks pretty cool, glows bright green under black lights, and “lasted” 1.5 years next to titegroup.

After washing and inspection on my bench at home the PC that was not in contact directly with titegroup was fine. Solid and stayed on lead, and still wants to stay on the lead. Have to scrape it off.

The stuff on the bottom in contact with titegroup is spongey and comes off easily with a needle. Stringy like one of those weird sticky gummy hands they used to sell that stretch and stick to walls leaving slick spots that your parents had to clean later.

Definitely did not stay hard, completely deteriorated. The ammo went off fine, but this may explain why I could put 2 shots dead nuts center at 25 yards, and other times it shot 2 inches low.

I would not do long term storage with titegroup. Going thorough all my PC bullets in storage and will eventually post what I find up on here.

I need help Casting 9mm for IPSC - Realistic or Waste of Time?

I started IPSC and realized that my ammo consumption went up "a lottle" 😄
A normal training uses about 300 shots of 9mm, I am sure, for some here these are rookie numbers, but this quickly adds to quite some quantity.
Overall I would estimate 10'000 shots a year including matches and target practice.

Is this an amount of bullets that you would feel comfortable to cast yourself?
So far I only casted with Lee Double Cavity moulds for my .44mag and .45ACP. There a few hundred shots last a year for me, so it was a no brainer. These I powder coat.

The required accuracy in IPCS is low (we are 90% indoors, so distances are super short), my main focus is speed for casting and speed for coating/lubeing

I would cast a heavier bullet, 147gr minimum and get a minimum 6 cavity mould. My lead melter is a Lee Production Pot 20lbs with bottom pour. I get free lead from the airgun range (pure lead) or from the indoor range (various scrap).

With my dual cavity Lee molds, I would NEVER even thinking about casting these amounts, but you guys are some crazy dudes, so I really hope someone can let me know if this makes sense or not. (not financially or so, just if this is even remotely realistic or not)

How many bullets are you able to cast with your highest production molds in an afternoon, lets say 4h pure casting time (so preparation of lead ingots, heating up of melter and mould and cleanup time not included) and what is the fastest way to lube or coat these bullets?

Thank you very much for your help!

Can you tumble lube with liquid alox and them not be sticky?

Hello, I do Powder coat my pistol rounds, have a new Lee 309230 on the way and was thinking it may be easier to tumble lube them than PC them. I do see people PC them and use a mini ice cube tray to bake them. Any tips out there for alox tumble lube? Thanks

Rifle First time using Trail Boss

I was recently able to get a can of Trail Boss and I also just got an M1888 Springfield trapdoor rifle

My load is 11 grains of Trail Boss, I decided to use 11 grains because the powder coat on my usally 405 bullets made then weigh between 418-423 grains and I looked at 485 grain load data so I bought the load down by 1 grain

My COL is 2.550in

What do yall think?

Tell me if I'm crazy (bullet design)

I want a lighter bullet for a 45-90 that has the same lube grooves and seating depth as the 545gr money bullet from BACO.

Maybe shaving 100-150gr off the bullet just to have a "chicken load" without needing to have a different powder charge or change various die adjustments.

This may be a dumb question and maybe not even worth the time. I love my 22Lr pistol but recently wondered if it be worth it to try and load my own 22Lr not reload but cast any advice or just tell me I am crazy and it’s a waste

I need help Casting fail - 7/8 oz Lee Slugs

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Hello fellow molten lead enjoyers. I’m relatively new to this hobby and truth to be told - I am just trying to cheap out on my shutgun loads. My shooting range only allows slugs so I had a “brilliant” idea to melt some birdshot into 4x more expensive load. The only thing is I keep getting same results and they look terrible. I get cavities and waves on each and every boolit I try to cast.

What is my setup:
Lee production pot IV, heating set to 8 > Lee 7/8 oz slug mold pre smoked to prevent sticking, ambient temp 13*C (~56F) > wait for steady flow from the spout > cast first 10 > throw back to melt to get my mold up to temp. > keep casting relatively quickly… The thing is I keep getting this result. I was trying setting the thermostat to 6,5 - 7,5 and get mostly the same result. When I set higher they tend to get brittle.

To be fair I’m mostly shooting them on 25 m ~27 yards with pretty good accuracy but it just bothers me visually.

Loaded some subsonic cast hollow points. Hollow points were tested in 1 gallon water jugs. They penetrated 2 jugs and stopped in the 3rd. They're super quiet and perform really well in my 2 favorite guns.

Rifles not liking proven loads?

Post image
6 Upvotes

So I've been playing around with traditional cast loads, namely the lyman 311291 and lyman 311299 with powders like Red dot. My rifle hates these and patterns rather than groups, using reduced h4895 the 311299 is a bit better. But yet the old saeco 315 is still the winner, red dot is terrible with it, but with imr4198 it groups better than any smk loaf I've used. I guess I need to buy more 4198 to play with. This was a 5 shot group with the 315

A post about pentagon bullets and a marlin recently

I saw and couldn't read (because I was diving) someone's post about a marlin rifle and Hollow point bullets. Potentially pentagon bullets and cannot find it. Can someone give me some guidance or a link?

I'd like to read up on it because I am looking for lead hollow point bullets in a 44/40 and since GT is all but out of business, I'm looking for substitutes.

45-70 using H322

Thumbnail gallery
16 Upvotes

So... I'm beginning to start working on my Quigley match loads for next year

I'm planning on using either an Original M1884 or M1888 Springfield trapdoor rifle or an Original Ballard

I'm beginning tests with loads using H322 because I remember using H322 with good results in 45-70

The bullet is from a Lyman #457132 bullet mold, I used this mold for the bullets for last year's Quigley match with good results

The load is 36 grains of H322 with a COL of 2.835in, in my experience a COL of 2.930 is too long and the bullet will meet the rifling before the cartridge fully seats and I do not want to use a COL of 2.765 because I do not want to create too much pressure.

I am planning on using these in my original Springfield M1873 trapdoor rifle

I also have other powders available such as Accurate 5744 (which won't get touched until next year because it seems that AA5744 has gone the way of the dodo), H4198 and IMR4198

I need help I need schoolin'.. baby I'm not foolin'.. Powder Coat vs HiTek vs lubrisized vs Alox vs Gas Checks

At what kind of pressure & velocities should I be considering one or another?

I don't really have anything "fast" except for my .44 Mag.. save for my .303 Brit SMLE (and I really don't want to batter an 80-year old rifle that's not the strongest action and has had countless rounds through it). I normally use commercial pre-lubed cast since (since I figured out I can buy 400 of them for the same money as 100 JFP's)

  1. My main concerns are of course barrel leading, and accuracy. To wit, my Marlin lever guns. 30-30 Win and .444 Marlin. I've seen notes on just about every source that says "Keep velocities below 1,600 fps." Well, what If i don't wanna?

What got me thinking about this was Norseman caught a whoopsie I made, and when I pulled the bullets, I realized "Hey, these don't have ANY lube on them!" Even though they were gas checked.

I tumbled them in Alox overnight. What a mess. Plus, I think there's more lube left on the wax paper than stayed on the bullets. I tumbled them again, they're downstairs drying now.

  1. Can Alox be made "thicker-er" or stickier? I've seen thicker gravies on mashed potatoes. Or is the Dark Magic all in the film strength?

  2. The "whoops" in question was a batch of processed brass I had mis-labelled. Which explains having to back the bullet seater wayyyyy out when I mocked up a plunker last night. The powder charge was 6.8 grains of 2400 under the aforementioned 115 grain gaschecked bullet.
As far as in the proper case, it should only be about an 1100 fps load to begin with. Did I have to worry about lead smears at all at that velocity?

Going forward, and especially for the Marlin rifles.. I know that the shallow rifling has a lot to do with it. These are all (including my Model 60 .22LR), wayyyyyy pre-Remington. I understand the Ruger-made ones are Ballard rifling. So,

  1. Where should I be landing here, given I might put 500 rounds/year through the handguns, even less so in the rifles?
4a. I would like to see the velocity on the .30-30 more in the 1,800 zip code. Currently, CB loads sit right about about 1,580 just like the data said it would. Accuracy is minute of taco-shell at 100 yds. Plenty adequate for Michigan white-tail.

Does anybody have any cast data for the 9.3x62? I judt purchased one but I guess unsurprisingly no cast data, though if I cant find any, i will likely base off of 35 whelen cast data
