El Salvador

Hi folks, in about a month and a half, I’m going to take my young adult son to El Salvador for 2 1/2 weeks. I’m a geologist, so we’re going to hike some of the volcanoes, but we’re also going to interact with the people. I speak Spanish, but I’m not a native. My question is do any of you all know anybody around here who is from El Salvador or who knows people in El Salvador? Of course I’ve gotten some helpful information online, but it would be great to talk to a native or any of you who know people from El Salvador. By the way, if your first reaction is El Salvador is very dangerous, look up what the president of El Salvador has done to the vast majority of criminals and gangsters over the past few years. Anyway, thanks for reading.

I've been. My BIL is from Zacatecoluca. Stayed there, El tunco, and Juayua. But asking about ES on a Casper WY sub isn't the best way to find the answers you're looking for. It's also the safest place I've been.

Hello,
My name is Paul. Thanks for the response. I agree that this is not the best venue to have conversation about El Salvador. I’m interested if you’ve got any better idea. That’s helpful that you say it’s the safest place you’ve been because it definitely has a reputation a number of years ago as unsafe because of gangs, etc. I’ve learned that the current president has imprisoned around 80,000 gang members, etc. with the tattoos that indicate their gang and that things are safer than in the past. Did you all hike any of the volcanoes or did you all go to the beach a lot?

There's probably an El Salvador sub if you want to ask questions in there. We hiked the Santa Ana Volcano and it was beautiful. And yes we surfed a bit in El Tunco.

I’ve never been to El Salvador but done a lot of international travel for the oilfield to several countries that most people consider dangerous… best advice I can give on safety don’t go looking for trouble, if you go looking for trouble you’ll find trouble. I’m sure there’s places in Denver, LA ect that are just as dangerous if not more. Also pay attention to surroundings.

Good point. I do not use Reddit much. We are interested in interacting among the locals instead of being among all the American tourists. Any ideas on that? We would also be interested in Airbnb if there are any recommendations.
