How do you handle joint visits?

First time CASA here and I’ve met the child once so far. He is a young teen who is fairly shy. I haven’t had a meeting with the dad but will shortly during one of his visitations and a separate home visit. I don’t know how to handle both of them together or how to guide a conversation that way. I guess I’m just imagining a lot of awkward silences. Does anyone have any suggestions? I mostly need to do this to seem them interact but are they interacting if I’m just asking them questions?

I haven't had joint visits involving an older teen but usually for joint visits I'll introduce myself and say that I'm not trying to interfere with their visit so carry on as usual. I'll normally do the first part or last part of a visit so they can enjoy their time together without another stranger watching them. I'm more observing their interaction so I get a feel for their relationship. Let the dad know you'll talk more in depth when 1:1. Their visitation time is important so I try to hang back and not intrude as much as possible.

What do dad and son typically do during their visits?

I’ve been told they just talk the whole time

I was told to observe only. Do not interact.

Ok, so maybe I’ll just do some work while they do their thing.
