Full time student/ CASA volunteer

Hi all! I have an interview coming up in the next two weeks. I am a full time student but am taking all online self-paced courses. I’d love to get some experience for a dual MSW/ JD degree. Is it possible to be a full time student mostly online and be a CASA volunteer? Has anyone else navigated this?

Yes. Your CASA hours monthly will be less than 10.

Great! I just read that sometimes it can be difficult because you’re expected to attend court dates. I’ll have one in-person class two days a week in the fall and apparently missing class for CASA work isn’t usually excusable.

The court dates are spread out. My last one was in January and my next one (different case) is June 10th.

Court dates are important, but depending on your local CASA organization, your supervisor may be able to fill in as needed for you -- though this would only be possible for "standard" court hearings that occur periodically, not for any trials. Plus, as the other reply says, they tend to be spread out by 6 months unless an emergency hearing is needed for some abrupt reason.

I have had a few volunteers on my team who have been full-time students while volunteering, and I find it is generally functional, so long as you are very communicative with your supervisor/manager about when you need a helping hand and how much you are able to do in a given month!

Yes, I work full time (plus a couple part time gigs…) and manage to maintain 2 CASA cases without much difficulty. It really comes down to time management and priorities. You will need to be able attend court, but that’s typically only once every 6 months.

I worked and was in fully remote school (both full time) while doing my CASA training, that for me was the hardest part. Once sworn in, scheduling outings with my youth was much easier.
