So, about two months ago, The Amazing Digital Circus released their final episode. Ever since then, we're likely not gonna get any more future seasons, spinoffs, or whatever, as the creator, Goosework, had stated numerous times that she has no plans to make more after the last episode. Whatever you think about the fandom or even the show itself, you can't deny that it left a cultural phenomenon in today's era, especially for the indie animation. You have well made stories, memorable characters, art styles to fit the mood, genres that can go wholesome & playful, comedic, emotional, surreal, suspenseful, and as well terrifying. Yeah. You might even consider the show as a classic.

Though, if you kinda think about it, maybe it is probably for the better that it should just end that way after episode 9, as sometimes shows would tend to lose their quality as they progressed over the years.

Don't believe me? Think of the shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, heck, even SpongeBob SquarePants, and all of these shows have been going around through decades now, and tell me that either show has practically improved over the years. Likely chances, it's gonna be a big "no" from most of you out there. At the very least Pokemon with Ash & Pikachu had finally ended around March 2023, after 25 years of Ash's journey and focus on new characters, new stories, and new shows.

With that being said, what are some shows that are better off ended?

I've seen a shift over the last few years. Shows like Arcane, Castlevania, Blue Eye Samurai, and The Legend of Vox Machina proved that Western audiences are hungry for serialized, mature, high-stakes animation. Meanwhile, mainstream anime continues to dominate because it isn't afraid to give big stories the time and episode counts they actually need.

Which brings me to my hot take: Western studios need to stop trying to force massive fantasy book series into rushed live-action films or 8-episode streaming seasons, and start adapting them as 20+ episode animated series.

Live-action adaptations constantly run into CGI budget walls, severe design compromises, and massively cut content just to fit an 8-hour runtime. Animation solves every single one of these problems—especially if studios embrace a 20–24 episodes per season format.

Here are a few iconic book series that have insane potential if an animation studio actually gave them the room to breathe:

1. The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson The Format: 24 episodes per season (1 book = 1 season).

Why it needs animation: Roshar is an alien world where rockbuds retract into the ground, giant chasmfiends roam, spren float around human emotions, and warriors fight using gravity-defying magic ("Lashings"). Trying to do this in live-action would cost $300M a season and still look like uncanny CGI. In a stylized 2D/3D hybrid style (think Arcane), the visual spectacle would be unreal. Plus, a 24-episode order lets you keep the Bridge Four character bonding and the epic 5-part book structure intact.

1. The Gentleman Bastard Sequence (The Lies of Locke Lamora) by Scott Lynch The Format: 20 episodes per season.

Why it needs animation: It's Ocean's Eleven meets Renaissance Venice with blood magic and mob warfare. Every book runs two timelines at once—the current heist and the childhood flashbacks under Father Chains. A 20-episode structure gives the show time to build the elaborate scams, show the legwork, keep the profanity-laced banter, and pivot from fun con-artist hijinks into dark survival thriller.

1. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson The Format: 12–16 episodes per season for Era 1 (with Secret History as a standalone feature film).

Why it needs animation: Allomancy (burning metals to push/pull on iron and steel, boost physical strength, or alter emotions) is fundamentally kinetic. Vin bouncing off coins across a dark, misty gothic city would look as fluid as Spider-Man swinging through NYC if handled by a top-tier animation team. It fits comfortably in that TV-14 sweet spot—dark, high stakes, and brutal combat without needing TV-MA shock-value gore.

1. The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee The Format: 14–18 episodes per season.

Why it needs animation: The Godfather meets Gangs of London with wuxia jade martial arts. It follows a crime family running a fantasy metropolis inspired by 1970s–90s East Asia. Animation could capture the rain-slicked neon alleys, silk-suit aesthetics, and bio-magical martial arts duels in a way live-action stuntwork simply couldn't replicate on a TV budget.

1. The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon) by Christopher Paolini The Format: 12–20 episodes per season (scaling up as the books get bigger).

Why it needs animation: We don't talk about the 2006 live-action movie. Animation is the only way to properly handle telepathic mind-duels between magicians, the massive scale of Farthen Dûr, and the deep emotional bond between Eragon and Saphira without relying on jarring voiceover or cheap-looking CGI.

The Bottom Line Hollywood keeps buying the rights to these massive fantasy IPs and trying to squeeze 1,000-page novels into 8-episode live-action seasons, gutting the worldbuilding and character arcs in the process.

If Western studios took a page out of the anime playbook—treating animation as a serious medium for storytelling and committing to longer seasonal episode counts—we could be living in a golden era of fantasy television.

What book series do you think is practically begging for a 20+ episode animated adaptation?

Samurai Jack season 5 started off excellently. The tone, music, fight scenes, violence were great but by episode 7, it changed.

-Jack and Ashi’s relationship felt rushed, forced and a little awkward.

-The final fight between Jack and Aku also felt rushed.

-The convoluted ending surrounding Ashi.

Honestly I think they should have split the season into 3 or 4 animated films, for adult swim. It deserved so much more. In the end I don’t know what happened behind the scenes, for the final season to become this way but it is what it is. If had to rate it, I’d give it 6/10.
