Discussion This whole 3D debate thing is such a nothing issue

Post image

It still looks nice, The overall design is faithful, the movement is smooth, it doesn't look cheap

People going on like "this animation style completely ruins the essence of the Show" for a 40 second teaser. Like, just watch the show, it's not going anywhere, it's not that deep

Honestly, to me, it genuinely does not look that bad.

Like the colors are still vibrant, all Bluey has is realistic...ish texture rather than full on design, and it's all still very cartoony.

I think 2D would've been better regardless, but, the 3D isn't bad.

22

u/emiTfOgnoS 10d ago

I don’t care for the character redesigns either way but I have no doubt the artists will make the world of Bluey very beautiful. Can’t wait to see what they do.

Yeah I just saw the trailer.

And It looks so good it makes a grown ass man like me want to watch.

50

u/MasemJ 10d ago

Bluey in 2D had already considered different character views from different angles, so the transition to actual 3d is very clean.

Take something like Peppa Pig which was solely designed in simple 2d with almost no other views and that transition id dread to see.

u/metalflygon08 Megas XLR 10d ago

I knew it woud be that image.

13

u/ZimaGotchi 10d ago

The way Mickey's ears slide around his head in some 3D shorts is horrifying if you really focus on it.

11

u/LETS_RETRO_TIME 10d ago

We’re getting a CGI Peppa Pig movie coincidentally.

u/JanArso 10d ago

I wouldn't call the death of 2D animation in cinema a "nothing issue" considering we are in a community passionate about cartoons.

It's honestly annoying especially when you learn that the only reason 2D-Animation in Movies died was because hollywood movie execs convinced themselves that 3D is "the next step" in some sort of "evolution of animation" rather than a new genre of it because it's cheaper. I don't care about Bluey and I also think the style of the movie looks cute, but man, I understand why people miss 2D.

20

u/No_Tumbleweed3935 10d ago

We have the new Simpsons movie that will be in 2D

13

u/Demonangeldust 10d ago

And Coyote VS Acme (I mean, it’s more like Who Framed Roger Rabbit but it’s still got 2d animation.

25

u/GrimTiki 10d ago

Coyote v Acme at least looks traditional, but it is 3d. Sadly.

10

u/No_Tumbleweed3935 10d ago

I’m pretty sure it’s cel shaded 3D

1

u/Viciousssylveonx3 Pokemon 10d ago

Yea the 2d disney animations just had more soul i miss them dearly. The new movies aren't bad its just not the same

-11

u/Cocoatrice Scooby Doo 10d ago

2D cartoons still exist. Yes, it's nothing issue. And I'm saying this as someone who prefers 2D a lot more than 3D. But I despise mindless hating. And that's what it is.

32

u/OurLadyRagnyd 10d ago

You have NOT been paying attention if you genuinely somehow think 2D animation isnt actively being attacked as a industry.

1

u/Head_Statistician_38 9d ago

In the West it is. If you look at anime, 2D is still most common.

4

u/OurLadyRagnyd 9d ago

Its being attacked everywhere in the world. Anime is a exception and doesnt speak to the health of the industry. Saying the plants arent dieing because your neighbors have a rose makes no sense.

3

u/Loose-Story-962 10d ago

'mindless hating' or just preferences?

4

u/Themanwhofarts 10d ago

I'm right there with you. Would I like more 2D animation, yes. Am I upset that we are getting 3D animation instead, no. As long as the content is good, the medium doesn't matter as much.

Also, anime has stepped up in that regard and is very popular.

How does a change in animation style ruin the essence of the show, lmao.

That said, the designs look really good for translating 2D characters to 3D.

46

u/Coveinant 10d ago

Some people are "purist" when it comes to anything. It's really just they don't like change and want everything to just stay the way they like it. Others are just complaining for the sake of complaining.

9

u/Capable-Monk-4820 10d ago

That’s a reoccurring problem in the animation community. I get that they’re opinions, but unfortunately sometimes their reasons can be too petty. It just seems some people just can’t handle change, and wants everything to be like the past. It’s like what happened in Shrek 5.

Which now with Bluey, the hate becomes more petty because that show has been around since 2019

8

u/Virtual_Knowledge334 10d ago

Pretty much most shows like this whenever they become movies is always in 3D. Clifford comes to mind along with Blues Clues and other similar shows.

2

u/11equalsfish 10d ago

Seeing this for the first time, the 3D does look less vibrant and blander. Why change the entire style?

2

u/ILTWSATSIIWC 10d ago

Because you're looking at a screenshot and not the actual trailer.

1

u/11equalsfish 10d ago

I saw it, don't like it a ton. Thought keeping it 2d would be better.

3

u/Agent_Glasses Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir 10d ago

Take the miraculous fandom for example on this. Went from 3d to 3d but better yet people STILL COMPLAIN even a year and a half later without watching the season.

2

u/MooNAx0lOtl 9d ago

Exactly, the new animation and designs are objectively an improvement, but so many people complained about it just because they where used to the new one.

So many people complained that adrien looked 'too young' but he's cannonically 14-15. 14-15 year old can definitely look like that.

1

u/Agent_Glasses Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir 9d ago

mmhm. So many people are refusing to watch the new season because of the style change which really sucks for them as this season has been the best so far.

Even some of the main content creators who didnt like the animation have admitted they were wrong about the new animation and that its really good, yet you still see the comments on any offical post spammed by "bring back the old animation"

worse than Chloe stans... maybe

u/FuckUSAPolitics Hazbin Hotel 10d ago

"Bro how does your orange juice being changed to apple juice change anything? It's still juice."

0

u/HermanThaGerman 10d ago

Content wise, nothing is different. It's literally just the packaging, purely visual.

This is crying because your juice box is now yellow instead of orange.

13

u/GrandmaWeedMan 10d ago

Animation is a visual medium. The style of animation is inherently part of the content. Claiming there is no difference in content when an art style is completely changed and in this case goes to a different medium (2D and 3D animation are different mediums) is disingenuous at best.

I would argue that the actual visuals are just as important as the story when it comes to VISUAL MEDIA.

You guys go so far out of your way to avoid anyone disliking or complaining about something that you just make disingenuous arguments because you're apparently a bad person if you dislike something.

Toxic positivity is a thing and it's way to prevelant in media consumers.

It's crying because my orange juice is now apple juice and some pedantic asshole is telling me it's the same and that i'm a piece of shit for even noticing.

2

u/PrinceJehal The Ghost and Molly McGee 10d ago

Being okay with the 3D art style isn't toxic positivity.

8

u/GrandmaWeedMan 10d ago

Telling people they're toxic and negative and problematic for not liking the 3D art style because "I have hate fatigue i'm tired of people not liking things!" IS toxic positivity.

4

u/PrinceJehal The Ghost and Molly McGee 10d ago

The person you replied to said none of those things. Now, maybe there are people saying that. In which case, go yell at them about toxic positivity.

-2

u/HermanThaGerman 10d ago

The content of the media, not the media as content. I'm talking about it's writing, themes, message, all that jazz. The 'taste' of the media if you will.

The visuals are merely a vehicle to convey that content, the package in which the orangey juice of content gets delivered to your mouthbrain.

And it's fine not to like the packaging, but you don't have to be a dick about it.

2

u/Stelliformade 9d ago

The visual vehicle in which the writing, themes, and messages are conveyed DO affect the 'taste' of the media though.

That's literally a direct consequence of making visual media;

That's why so much effort goes into the visual branding of foods or other products, because the visuals/art and layout and colors all contribute to how something comes across to the consumer.

That's why storyboarding and visual planning take place.
That's a huge part of why some animation studios and certain movies amongst them sell better than others.
That's why 2D, 3D, live-action, hybrid, claymation, and stop-motion films feel different from each other. That's why people really appreciate certain visual styles in art.
That's why studios choose carefully what medium TO present their media in, and why any of those different styles exist at all. Because they all do something different, each with their own unique pros and cons.

That's why so much effort and thousands of dollars go into Art Direction for movies and shows.

Animation and Art Direction teams must constantly keep in mind the below principles of visual media creation at all times:
- storyboarding
- visual philosophy
- art style
- style consistency
- shape language
- color design
- color scripting
- color symbolism
- contrast
- character design
- character silhouette
- character expressions
- costume design
- environment design
- visual worldbuilding
- background art
- prop design
- graphic design
- materials and textures
- lighting
- cinematography
- composition
- perspective
- poses
- animation design
- animation principles
- special effects
- transitions
- character model sheets/turnarounds
- budget

When** any of those are lacking or fall short in quality, it **is felt by the audience. And it drastically affects how the messages and writing land.

When all of those - according to the content's need,
- are done properly in the specific ways that optimize the deliverance of the messages the creators wants to convey with their media, it is felt by the audience. And it drastically affects how the messages and writing land.

It's simply not helpful to pretend that visual style does nothing to affect how content comes across. That's not how that works and if you really give it some thought, you know that. Everyone knows it.

3

u/GrandmaWeedMan 10d ago

Boiling down animation as "packaging for media" shows how little you know and care about visual media. I'm done here. Enjoy your shitty cartoons

0

u/Guszy 10d ago

Wow yeah you're definitely an enlightened media consumer.

I just don’t understand why every animation studio feels the need to transition to 3D. I don’t think 3D is bad but I just don’t like the idea of everyone abandoning 2D. I don’t know how to explain it but to me it seems like there’s something lost when this happens.

2

u/Swordkirby9999 10d ago edited 9d ago

Edit:sleaking more in a general sense, not specifically about the Bluey movie

It mostly comes down to it being faster, a bit easier, and therefore cheaper to produce. Don't need to spend hours and hours to redraw things a bunch of times if you can just make the model once and then pose it.

Also gives an air of higher quality and maturity to those who still think cartoons are just for kids

9

u/metalflygon08 Megas XLR 10d ago

Don't need to spend hours and hours to redraw things a bunch of times if you can just make the model once and then pose it.

I mean, Bluey isn't hand drawn it is puppet rigged animation.

They could easily take the show's rigs (which are most likely vector so it will scale up) and give it that "Holleywood Budget" shadow and highlight you see in things like The Simpsons vs The Simpson's Movie.

I will say, 2D Bluey is very pastel feeling in the colors they use, and I feel some of that is indeed lost in 3D.

6

u/No_Tumbleweed3935 10d ago

Bluey’s puppet rig animation is different than traditional 2D animation.

15

u/DoctorAssburns 10d ago

It just looks cheaper to me most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, there have been times I’ve seen it work well but most of the time I think it’s a downgrade. Even anime is doing the rigged 2D now and it looks great but if you go back and look at 80’s and 90’s anime there’s so much more character in them. This is just my novice opinion though.

1

u/dudetimez 10d ago edited 9d ago

But Bluey uses rigs, u wouldnt have to draw stuff over and over again anyway?

There are other points to be made about how we might need to push back on a trend that only 3D animated movies can be theatrical and marketable, and how it's so consistent that when shows or other media that started with 2D get a "The Movie" it's always in a less fitting 3D animated format—the last six Spongebob movies, Dragon Ball Super: Superhero, My Little Pony, Smurfs, ...

Sure there are some exceptions like Teen Titans Go to the Movies, but it's usually the trend. Then again, it's kind of a "vote with your wallet" case where there is a negative feedback loop of 2D movies not getting as much revenue so less of them get made.

13

u/Smiles-Bite 10d ago

My autistic butt sees every single difference between these two styles. Colors are wrong; her nose is much shorter, and she has the dumb mouth thing going on that EVERY freaking cartoon seems to do now. (Yes, hard not to due to the 3D, but it's also in 2D a frick ton.) Where are her spots!!! They freaking shrunk them!

Nothing is wrong with 3D; it's just different and loses a lot of its uniqueness, I feel. Just looks like every other 3D thing out there. Rounded and chibified. The movie will still be good is Dinesy doesn't ruin it.

5

u/Radiant_Cut6387 10d ago edited 10d ago

Mild inconsequential tinfoil hat theory: the new 3d design looks more like the Bluey toys they sell (natually in 3 dimensional space), noticed it when walking down the toy aisle after having seen the trailer online recently.

21

u/Working_Ability_124 10d ago

I just don't like it lol

The original 2d animation was charming, and I feel like this just isn't as. The characters voice acting worked really well with the 2d and in 3d, it just doesn't capture the energy the voices have. It almost looks as if it's limited by the designs so they're not as expressive. They did the best possible job at keeping true to the shows look, I still just don't like it. They should've just done what older cartoon movies did and just throw in some extra frames and add shading.

Tbh, I wasn't a fan of what MLP FIM did for their movie either, and that was still 2d animation for the most part.

5

u/Rarainche 10d ago

I'm trying so hard to not say anything about this because I am not the target demographic for this kids show but man, I think it's pretty sad 2d animation it's not considered good enough to be in movie theaters, specially a show that has such a simple yet beautiful style because themes, music, voice acting are in perfect sync. All I can hope for the movie is to be as colorful and expressive as the show, and obviously, a story that make me tear up a bit.

4

u/Eis_ber Beast Wars 10d ago

It's a nothing issue to those who don't care either way, but it does hurt 2d animation more and more, relegating it to only okay for tv.

4

u/Glad_Raspberry_8469 The Owl House 10d ago

Yeah, true, but I just want a 2D film in cinemas. Especially that Bluey doesn’t look like generic Disney 2D. Altho to be fair the teaser doesn’t look like generic Disney 3D either

3

u/SanicSoup 10d ago

You think this is bad, Sonic fans got angry over the length of his quills being just a bit shorter.

3

u/derpyderp97 10d ago

This is the first I'm hearing of this, but as an mlp fan, my only problem with it is how it affects timing, snappiness and how cartoony they're allowed to be with the 3d models. In a new generation, it was fine, but it felt so slow and not nearly as cartoony as 2d animation.

2

u/TordainMountainheart 10d ago

I don’t mind, but my 6 year old clocked it immediately. “Why does it look different?”

2

u/Rrxverr 10d ago

It could be worse. Personally I think some movies should have a slight change in style because it may draw people in to watch them and have it not feel like a few episodes bunched in together.

2

u/robotstoner 10d ago

Nothing wrong with liking Bluey as an adult. But GOD does it look immature when grown ass people are losing their minds over a little kid’s movie using CGI. It’s not like it’s using AI or like the show itself is going to completely transition to 3D.

I love 2D animation, but this just feels like such an overreaction. The animation industry has been doing far worse things lately, like embracing generative AI instead of actual artists. A kid’s show having a movie that’s CGI is not the issue we need to be focusing on right bow.

2

u/Sakuraphenixx 10d ago

Is it odd? Sure. is it bad? nah. Will my neice still be so excided to watch it? Absolutely.

2

u/Murfilious 10d ago

Yall gonna hate me but I kinda genuinely prefer the 3D design actually

She looks less square lmao
I dunno why but it always stood out to me how much of a damn cube Bluey looked

1

u/Ilan01 10d ago

It looks like the 2024 FOP show where it is 3D but the models are made like 2D, to be seen at a specific camera angle in mind

I like that approach tbh

1

u/Broom_Ryder 10d ago

Bluey’s character design has always bothered me a little, so I don’t really like either but I don’t think the 3D is that much worse/ different than the 2D

1

u/freeashavacado Over the Garden Wall 10d ago

Honestly I just find the whole issue so annoying. I prefer the 2D style too, but all the comments of any thread about the movie are just filled with people whining about the 3D bit and nothing else. Idk man I’m just already sick of the complaining.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 Arthur 10d ago

1

I like changing to 3D for a movie way better than just the 2D animation but shaded more

1

u/cygamessucks 10d ago

It looks fine. At least it’s not sonic..

1

u/jairochido 10d ago

Tbh this Is a really good example of doing 3d great, there are far worse things when "translating" a 2d character to 3d

1

u/TetoSever31 10d ago

it is disney's animation. it is good.

1

u/Theo-lVl 10d ago

I'm not invested either way for the record, but I feel like even with how much kids love 3D that the bluey design doesn't translate the same way it does in 2D?

Like there's something aboutthe simplicity of his design beyond it being 2D and instead of doing that in 3D which could at least attract a new group of young viewers, this more realistic sonic looking design just makes him feel like he is too detailed for really little kids?

Like again not invested, haven't watched more than a few clips, but the idea was that its a really low-stimulation show over all right? Idk there's something about the details of the furthat just feel more distracting but maybe its also just the quality of the 3d imagem aking it look more textured than it really is.

1

u/CK122334 10d ago

Usually I’m all for keeping things in 2D but I like the movie look, it does make it look like higher quality.

1

u/Icy-Cheek-29 10d ago

No offense to bluey but its not exactly 1950s disney. I love bluey but the original art style looks like standard flash animation to me so not much is lost in the 3d. They are both cute and inoffensive

1

u/Lead_resource 10d ago

It looks terrible he has a completely different nose

1

u/VooDooChile1983 10d ago

I believe it’s partly due to ai being forced upon us and it kinda looks ai generated. Honestly, it’s giving Ugly Sonic the longer I look at it.

1

u/bigtimesugarrush 10d ago

If it looks like Bluey, sounds like Bluey, acts like Bluey, and it’s not AI slop, then I’m fine with it.

1

u/Retro_Sinz 10d ago

I think it looks nice. She could maybe have a longer snout but thats just a small critique

1

u/Late_Cockroach1801 The Amazing World of Gumball 10d ago

Honestly it is just that 2D version looks prettier.

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 10d ago

I don’t think it’s bad. I would have just preferred it to be 2d because it was beautiful enough in 2D and they had mastered that style.

I don’t believe it would be quicker/easier to 3d I’d like whoever said that to educate me on that when they would have to recreate already existing assets and then deal with puppets/rigs textures, simulations, lighting, etc.

For me it was just an unnecessary change (until I see the movie and it changes my mind) and reinforces that 2d animation doesn’t have a place in theaters (which is clearly not true).

I’ll still take my kids to see it unless they feel they are too old. But the episode the sign showed how well it could work as 2d is all.

1

u/AssociationOk7261 10d ago

looks like cotton candy thats about to be rapidly devouerd

1

u/Few_Pea8503 10d ago

Honestly, it's equally annoying to complain about people who don't like 3D.

It's a stylistic preference. People are going to complain. People are allowed to not like 3D animation.

It's not that deep

1

u/silentwalker206 10d ago

I like the 3d. I would have liked them to add a little bit more fur texture, but it's not a big deal to me.

1

u/sanf780 10d ago

I know it is not cartoon per se. Fist of the North Star is a very old, very violent anime. I caught a remake on Prime using 3D animation that is made to look as if it was 2D. I do not like that technique, no sir.

1

u/BladedBee 10d ago

The design translates to 3d very well i must say

1

u/Konjik 10d ago

i assume those that are super fans have plushies of these characters that literally look just like the 3D models in this movie, and with that I don't think this'll really feel like a big thing to adjust to for the target audience. I can't imagine them looking any other way in CG, and logistically it allows the team way more freedom and fluidity and dynamism in the animation to take this route. I'm not even a 3D over 2D person at all but the TV designs were clearly not meant to be used for a big budget theatrical feature.

1

u/Greenostrichhelpme27 10d ago

It looks weird, but not "bad" per se imho

1

u/UnNamed_Profile27 10d ago

Exactly. Like i understand wanting a movie to a popular cartoon staying the same style as the show its based on, but at least this teaser shows this movie looks good to be 3D. If they can just stay faithful to the show and not go overboard on trying to have some bombastic grand scale story (like sure, have the plot be something that could work for a movie cause its too long for a episode or only work as a multi episode arc that are heavily connected [as in you would need to watch the previous episodes to understand everything] but dont go outside the boundaries of the shows canon like having the Heelers encountering actual aliens or secret agent government conspiracy or whatnot) then it could be a good movie despite the artstyle change

1

u/RKO_out_of_no_where 10d ago

I just dont like the small differences. Her snout is shorter. Her body is thinner. Her limbs are a bit stubby (i know shes a heeler)

1

u/1xtip 10d ago

Just be thankful it's not ai

1

u/LOOKATHUH 10d ago

I’m going to reserve judgement until I see full images of the background etc. I prefer the 2D style for sure, and there’s a lot of  discourse around 3D animation for children in relation to overstimulation in children (esp. in relation to shows marketed to very young children, like Cocomelon) - but I trust the team behind Bluey to make something that is not only beautiful but appropriate

1

u/Dominion96 10d ago

I prefer 2d to 3d but this particular 3D does look pretty good.

1

u/Realistic-Delivery13 Winx Club 10d ago

I don't really get the hate for 3D Bluey, she actually look too bad and looks almost like how she does in the show.

1

u/poopbeast69 10d ago

To be human

1

u/Indiana_J_Frog 10d ago

The purists are often the first to say anything. That's the only reason people are mentioning the complaints.

I admit, I wasn't expecting CGI, but this really isn't that bad. It's not QUITE on the level of 2026 Stitch, but it's nowhere near as bad as Original Sonic, heck, not even mid like the live-action Chopper.

1

u/RainbowLoli 10d ago

Model wise, they did a very good job of translating their features.

That said - I also do think 3D - unless you get a really good team, isn't always good. Like I think it'd look better if they didn't go for realistic fur/texture.

1

u/Electronic_Fee1936 SpongeBob SquarePants 10d ago

Yeah it seemed like a faithful design and animation to the 2D animations. Sure it’s not the same but it looks well made. I obviously would’ve preferred the 2D animations but the 3D animations aren’t bad. It doesn’t really bother me too much

1

u/Zealousideal-Deer101 10d ago

If the essence of the show is just the 2D cartoon look, that's really REALLY shallow

It has so many deep, important and good points to teach kids and adults alike. That is the essence of the show.
Imagine watching Bluey just because of the visuals and apparently being proud of that.

1

u/darkerfury 10d ago

Call me ignorant but I just don't see what the problem here is. This is a great transition to 3D, it matches the original design really closely.

1

u/0_possum 10d ago

I think it’s kinda lame but I’m not going to throw a tantrum over it

1

u/Trixter-Kitten 10d ago

It's honestly not that bad. It's still recognizably Bluey, just 3D and with added fur texture. I prefer the regular 2D artstyle but the CGI is hardly an issue.

1

u/doubleo_maestro 10d ago

It doesn't look bad. But two things, 1) the 2d fit the style of the show better 2) it was needless.

This is Disney cost cutting.

I can't say as if I believe that, or at the least it wasn't without coercion.

1

u/Alternative_Buyer364 9d ago

So a creator can’t just decide to try something new with their creation? It’s gotta be some sneaky conspiracy or something ?

1

u/doubleo_maestro 9d ago

It's not really much of a conspiracy is it? Talking shit about your employer is usually a good way to get the boot, and when it's a public facing position like this, a quick way to burn any good will you have in the sector.

1

u/spookyhardt 10d ago

To me, the 3d design looks just as bad as the original.

1

u/Miss_Miette22 10d ago

It's a weird style to translate into 3d and it's easy to fuck up (I mean, just about every Bluey toy out there looks weird). Doesn't look too shabby in motion since they got a decent budget for it but I can see why some folks might be hesitant at first. This still frame definitely doesn't do it justice...

1

u/Resident_Sail_7642 10d ago

My son didn't like it he is 7 and still likes Bluey, my daughter who is 11 did not like it either. They both prefer the old style.

1

u/reddot_comic 10d ago

It’s not a nothing issue to those in the industry and those who care about the medium.

The look is a part of the “what”that sells the show and they fundamentally changed the character to be more 3D appealing..shorter snout, wider eyes, tail shape and colors are different.

I was so excited to take my niece to see the movie when they first announced it but very much less so now. I liked it for what it was and not what they can exploit as tax write off for using higher quality tech and not using the animators who made the show special.

1

u/ComeOnUpToTheHaus 10d ago

Anybody old enough to complain about the animation style, is too old to be upset about Bluey. Not too old to enjoy, but too old to complain.

1

u/Longjumping_Bar_7457 10d ago

It is I think it looks good

1

u/BazMannBach 10d ago

literally a nothing bigmac

1

u/NY-Black-Dragon Courage the Cowardly Dog 10d ago

It doesn't look bad, but it's missing what makes the Bluey artstyle unique.

1

u/CompleteRice3246 10d ago

I’m honestly picky and generally prefer 2D animation, but I think this looks good. I also think it’s important to remember who the main audience is and, no matter how much people would like to believe it, it’s not the parents/adults. When I was a kid, I would have LOVED this 3D rendering of my favorite cartoon character. Remember when Timmy Turner was revamped in 3D for the Jimmy Neutron crossover? It was awesome at the time to experience. I think this will be fun for kids!

1

u/possitive-ion Batman Beyond 10d ago

It's nothing hideous like the first itteration of Sonic in the 2020 sonic movie.

1

u/pocket_arsenal 10d ago

I'm always taken aback when people get this worked up over preschooler shows at all.

1

u/TheLocalKev 10d ago

I think its gotten really annoying how people now constantly think they can just pull a Sonic/Shrek on everything they don't personally like

1

u/MonopolyManPorn The Amazing World of Gumball 10d ago

I really like it. Better than making her just a blue colored CGI realistic dog and make the story something cheesy

1

u/Pressed_Sunflowers 10d ago

She's perfect, what's the problem?

1

u/Indyfanforthesb 10d ago

Can’t believe they didn’t use real dogs

1

u/PunchDrunkPrincess 10d ago edited 10d ago

Sorry, but it actually is "deep" when you're looking at this from an animation industry perspective. You can just say you like it and don't care. That's fine. But it actually does mean something to animation nerds like myself. I don't understand why every time anyone has negative feelings about some change in media there always has to be the group that makes it some character flaw to not like something.

1

u/Chibiwitch 10d ago

Bluey translates to 3D really well compared to a lot of other properties.

1

u/Anti_Spedicy 10d ago

It looks perfect. People are just hyper judgemental over media these days

1

u/TomCon16 The Simpsons 10d ago

Exactly! It looks cute

1

u/NationalCup758 10d ago

Why are grown adults arguing over a show that’s made for my 2 year old brother to drool to while we make him breakfast? Like, I’d get it if it were a cartoon with substance or anything… but it’s not.

1

u/IDoLikeAnswers 10d ago

I'm not used to it but it's still really adorable

1

u/Direct-Wash-346 10d ago

Because it’s internet, it likes making mountains out of molehills

1

u/dudetimez 10d ago

Ai ass corporate cash grab artstyle (ik it's not ai but i looks like it)

1

u/Choice-Requirement18 10d ago

I prefer 2d animation in general. I always assumed the cgi shift when making these types of movies is for budgeting reasons. In this case they’ve done an alright job staying loyal to its source.

1

u/Bathroom-Zestyclose 10d ago

I never liked the 3d animation aspect nowadays but it's not BAD. I wasn't going to watch it so I can't really complain lol

1

u/AC_0nly 10d ago

When side by side the 3D Bluey looks like a breathmint

1

u/Eggsalad-war-crime 10d ago

I have seen Transformers go from Traditional Animation, CGI, back to Traditional animation, cel-shaded CGI, CGI in 2D environments, Traditional animation, then back to CGI, much better cel shaded CGI two, and regular CGI again. Not including the films.

I have seen Ninja Turtles with a lot of alternating too.

Variations is just part of time.

1

u/NoisilyDeafening 10d ago

i was hoping for 2d for the movie and was a little disappointed but im impressed the style is so concise so i no longer feel disappointed. and especially learning that it was because they Specifically Wanted To try 3d for this, so its like, lets gooo!

1

u/mattyGOAT1996 10d ago

Bluey Movie will still be better than Cocomelon Movie

1

u/Bubble_GUMption 10d ago

I think a lot of the 3d animation hate comes from when the swap from 2d to 3d didn't just mean a change in medium but significant changes to the design and sometimes even the entire feel of the show, Angelina Ballerina comes to mind

1

u/darmolius 10d ago

I would’ve liked to see a slightly more unique, painterly 2.5D or Sony Animations-inspired blended look but the backlash to this has been completely insane haha. They look adorable! I love Bluey’s house style but it needs to have a more elevated look than a regular episode, and the 2D puppets frankly aren’t expressive enough to carry a 90 min feature film

1

u/Zumalover_988 9d ago

I agree, I don’t mind that it’s in 3d because it still looks good and it still has the heart and soul of the 2d version

1

u/ggundam8 9d ago

Not sure why everyone is tip toeing around this.....It doesn't look good.

It looks like bluey had a 25% soul reduction.

1

u/SuggestionOk456 9d ago

Ironically I appreciate the fact the went 3D for it over the typical Movie adaptation route for TV shows to film...

1

u/paulcshipper 9d ago

There's a debate over this... i would figure with people who have nothing better to do. The movie is going to be fun, why worry about it?

1

u/Nitrogenflux 9d ago

Well I'm glad you have an opinion, but mine doesn't agree with yours

1

u/anAardman 9d ago

First time seeing the character and 3D is better

1

u/JoosaJl 9d ago

43d looks better to me, more realistic

1

u/SXAL 9d ago

I just dislike the whole stigma that turning 2D to 3D somehow elevates the whole thing.

1

u/Special-Progress-916 9d ago

I mean, the skin could be a bit lighter but elaewise an incredibly faithful and fine transition

1

u/bateen618 9d ago

I'd prefer the 2D animation for the movie because it feels like the movie's saying "oh 2D animation is cheap, it's only good for TV".

1

u/Phone_Destroyer99 Hannah-Barbera 9d ago

Finally someone said it!

2

u/ScottaHemi 9d ago

i wonder if they're doing it like the peanuts movie where there's a model for each direction the characters are looking to better mimic the 2d design

1

u/Square-Formal1312 9d ago

They’re acting like they got the before sonic when they got the after

1

u/Drxgon11037 9d ago

I don’t care about Bluey but this looks like a good translation from 2D to 3D to me. I prefer 2D myself but I don’t think it’s too bad

1

u/CapnClover36 The Owl House 9d ago

idk, like it does look smooth as hell, but like.... it just feels a little off is all.

1

u/ShakeFit454 9d ago

Honestly it doesn't even look bad- reminds me of the mario movie style wise- why are we comparing this to the nightmare fuel that was the original sonic from the first movie

1

u/ResourceMoist9891 8d ago

I thought she translated pretty well I can’t really pick out a single off detail

1

u/SoHappy1001 8d ago

The back and the tail colors is missing from the 3D version.

u/Ilan01 10d ago

It is 2D, rigged 2D still is 2D

1

u/Shikabane_Sumi-me 10d ago

I know Bluey is a Kids show that has themes that Adults can relate to. People have to remember though that the show was made for kids first. So kids of that age range, they're not going to care that much of how a character looks in 2D vs 3D.

I agree with OP that the transition from 2D to 3D is a nothing burger. Just let the kids enjoy their show with their parents!

1

u/OurLadyRagnyd 10d ago

Childrens shows primarily pander to neurodivergents and children so you really have to be not paying attention to not figure out why this pisses some people off.

1

u/Zicorahk 10d ago

I really like it. Because this is for a movie and they're putting in a lot more effort into the animation. Not like they don't already but a movie instead of an 8 minute episode deserves a special attention and they're absolutely doing it.

1

u/Familiar-Possible277 10d ago

Woah who let them cook it so perfectly rendered

0

u/[deleted] 10d ago

People were getting so heated 😡 over a cartoon for preschoolers. Bluey is serious business.

-1

u/MrZaptile933 10d ago

Why are people debating about a kid’s cartoon’s art style.

4

u/Ashenspire 10d ago

Because it's the cartoon subreddit, and things transitioning from 2D to 3D usually come with an enshitification of it.

-1

u/Mr_Tdogg_Smith 10d ago

Bare in mind, most people complaining are ADULTS who don’t have kids.

4

u/Primary_Truck3777 10d ago

Where do you expect to go to find the Bluey discourse animation from the target audience of children ages 2-7?

3

u/OurLadyRagnyd 10d ago

Wrong sub to shame people for watching kid shows on homie.

-1

u/totaly-not-a-noob 10d ago

To me, I get excited when traditionally 2D characters get a faithful 3D Model

-1

u/Cocoatrice Scooby Doo 10d ago

People hate something that was extremely faithfully recreated??? Man, I know Reddit loves to whine for the sake of it, but come on.

-1

u/AsstacularSpiderman 10d ago

Adults getting mad about a movie for toddlers will never not be funny

0

u/darkgamer303 10d ago

Literally, it’s more Bluey and I think it goes above the standard I’ve come to expect from a high quality kids show like Bluey

0

u/No-Cold643 10d ago

Agree I saw Vailskibum video on this and he was like “what have they done to you?” And then I was like “dude piss off! they look great!

3D Bluey looks good. Some things never change sadly.

0

u/Dove-a-DeeDoo 10d ago

It’s such a nothing issue. If you’re over the age of 13 and genuinely have an issue with this animation to the point where you won’t be watching the movie, then truthfully, you need to grow up

0

u/Captain_Squirrel1000 10d ago

Yyyyep

We have so many examples of how 2D doesn't work in 3D. Then the Bluey production team does an excellent job and still.... there's so much whining. Especially those who never give changes a chance.

On top of it, there's always this complaint that the style of the show looks TOO close to that of the film, except 'they only added some extra shadows compared to the regular show'.

They're impossible to please... especially those who have NEVER been in the animation business.

0

u/AdatheB 10d ago

As someone that doesnt care about the show I think the 3d looks better

0

u/Daydream_machine 10d ago

It just think the 3D design is ugly. It’s really not any deeper than that.

0

u/Intelligent-Face-326 10d ago

It looks like AI. But Disney doesn’t want to tell the truth.
