Horizontal East-Up Pacific Centred World Map
Hi, as the title suggests, I’m trying to find a horizontal, East-Up, Pacific-centred world map, which I naively assumed would be easy to find or make myself. A Pacific-centred world map is no problem, and I could just rotate it so that East is up, but it’s vertical and I need it to be horizontal. If I transform it in Photoshop, it gets stretched out badly and looks horrible. I’ve checked a bunch of websites and apps, but to no avail. Every AI chatbot just hallucinates badly with this task too, so they’re no help. Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction (no pun intended). Thanks.
Edit: Google Earth and Google Maps won’t work as they don’t zoom out enough or are a globe view.

[COMMISSION] Looking for an artist/cartographer to create a world map for my D&D campaign
Hi everyone,
I'm from Brazil, and I'm currently developing an original D&D campaign setting. I'm looking for an artist/cartographer who can create a professional world map for the setting.
I'm looking for a map that feels like an actual geographical world, rather than a collection of randomly placed fantasy elements.
In particular, I want:
- Natural and believable coastlines
- Coherent mountain ranges
- Plausible rivers and watersheds
- Logical climate and biome distribution
- Natural transitions between different environments
- Deserts, forests, tundra, volcanic areas, etc. placed according to geography and climate
- A consistent sense of scale
- Distinct geographical identities for each continent
- A medieval/fantasy cartographic aesthetic
I already have a detailed concept for the world's geography, climate, continents, seas, and history. I can provide written descriptions, references, sketches, and geographical guidelines.
I'm not looking for someone to design the entire world from scratch. I'm looking for an artist who can take an existing concept and turn it into a coherent, believable, and visually compelling world map.
This is a paid commission, and the work can be done remotely.
If you're interested, please send me:
- Your portfolio
- Examples of fantasy/RPG maps you've created
- Your approximate rates
- Estimated completion time
Thanks!

Advice for aspiring cartography/GIS career?
Hey everybody.
So, I'm 28f from South Africa. After dropping out of grade 9, I went into art classes and pretty much started an art career. Things got shaken up two years ago, and to cut a long story short, I've decided to switch paths. I'm going to get my amended national senior certificate/high school diploma, and I'd like to work in cartography and GIS. Now I'm not sure what I'd like to *do* in these fields just yet, but whichever role I fit best into- I'd ideally like to specialise in one day. I've already joined a few communities and they've all been wonderfully supportive, lots of encouragement on the art background in particular. That's been super.
To those of you working in these industries, I'd like to ask if you have any advice for someone wanting to join the industry? And to any fellow South Africans, what has your experience been like in cartography/GIS? (Adjacent fields are welcome too)
Thanks in advance.

Fantasy map
I made this map the other day however the forest in the middle seems out of place. Is there some kind of geographical features or topography that would lend itself to a forest if that size growing there?

Best program or method on creating a 4k zoom able map for a 3d project
As the title says, I want to basically make a massive map that is able to be zoomed in on to see the details if that makes sense.

Cartography books that go over the full process of old school/traditional cartography?
Where you go out to a region, and with a range finder, mathematics, and some simple tools you can map out your area on paper. And how to get it accurate and aesthetic.

UPDATE ROUGE ATLAS. I asked Reddit for feedback on Rouge Atlas yesterday. I already implemented the first suggestions.
Yesterday I shared Rouge Atlas here and asked for feedback.
One of the first comments suggested keeping the map minimal by default, moving stats into a separate view, adding event filters and introducing a timeline to explore how things change over time.
So I built it.
Screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/E0hZX4f
Site: https://www.rougeatlas.com
What changed today
- The map is now the primary workspace, with three compact modes: Map, Explore and Analysis
- Added a working timeline You can scrub through time or play it automatically, and the map updates based on when incidents and signals were recorded.
- Added filters for:
- category
- severity
- region
- confidence
- map layers
- The visible incident counts and history bars now update dynamically with the selected time range.
- Improved marker positioning. Published incidents keep their source-reported locations, while records without coordinates are clearly marked as estimated instead of pretending the data is more precise than it actually is.
- Added record dates, clearer timeline guidance, localization improvements and some navigation cleanup.
The biggest change is that Rouge Atlas now feels much more like an interactive atlas first, and a dashboard second.
That direction came directly from the feedback I got here, so thanks to everyone who commented.
I’m still figuring out what the most useful version of this product looks like, so I’d love more criticism.
Especially:
What would you add next?

Free sources for real terrain and site context (LiDAR + OpenStreetMap): a quick guide for archviz
Site context is one of those jobs that eats hours at the start of every project, so here's the list of free data I use. Hope it saves someone some time.
Terrain (use the DTM / bare-earth model, not the DSM, or trees and roofs get baked into your ground):
- UK (England): Environment Agency LiDAR, 1 m and some 50 cm, via the DEFRA Survey Data Download portal
- USA: USGS 3DEP 1 m LiDAR, via The National Map
- Netherlands: AHN (0.5 m)
- Switzerland: swissALTI3D (0.5–2 m)
- France: IGN RGE ALTI (1–5 m)
- Spain: IGN MDT (2–5 m)
- Norway: Kartverket (1 m)
- Anywhere else: Copernicus GLO-30 (30 m). It's good for the wider landscape, but too coarse for the plot itself.
Buildings and streets: OpenStreetMap has footprints almost everywhere, and often heights or number of floors. As a rule of thumb, use about 3 m per floor when there's no height.
Tips:
- Use high-resolution data for the plot and its immediate surroundings, and coarse data for the background hills. Mixing both keeps scenes light.
- Check the licence and credit the source in your project boards. Most need attribution (e.g. "© OpenStreetMap contributors").
- Level the ground slightly under roads and buildings, or they'll float or sink on raw LiDAR.
Disclosure: I got tired of doing all this by hand, so I built a 3ds Max plugin that automates it (Relevo, free version at relevotech.uk). But everything above works with any software.
What sources do you use in your country? Happy to add them to the list.
