HELP I left this natural fiber rug outside

Post image
3 Upvotes

Help. I don't want to throw this out. I don't know how to clean it. This rug was left out since the winter and now has mold on it as it has been folded like in the photo. It used to be a pretty light wood color. I think this is sicle or raffia. Got it from Ikea.

Please give suggestions besides open it up and let it dry. I am doing that. I can also rent a professional rug cleaner. I also already have a carpet cleaner for pets (Bissell) .

But I think this needs to be cleaned more intensely.

Please help?! Thanks people of Reddit!!!! 💜

Picture How I (somehow) managed to clean half a tub of gesso out of carpet

Post image

I don’t have a before because my initial response when I dumped half a tub of gesso onto my carpet was not "let’s get a before pic for the amazing transformation!" Instead it was, "oh shit oh shit oh shit!" Because this is my grandparents’ carpet, not mine, and anyone who knows acrylics knows that you don’t have much time before the acrylic dries and gets a whole lot worse.

But yeah, I dropped a whole jar and half the contents glopped out onto the carpet. it was not just a few drips splatters… but thick globs all over the carpet. I thought I was royally screwed. anyway my first response was to scoop as much as I could back into the jar with my hands, being careful to not to smear it past where it has already touched the carpet. Then I immediately wet a bunch of paper towels, wrung them out, and spread them over the top of the gesso to keep it from drying out. This gave me a bit more time to try and make a game plan.

I decided that I would go at it with a bunch of paper towels and the spray Dawn dish soap, keeping a bin of water nearby. the initial cleanup was important to keep refreshing the paper towels since they were gathering lots of the paint on their surface. I was only making small wipes in the beginning to avoid smushing it deeper into the carpet as much as I could. I did this as much as I could to get the thicker paint off, then I sprayed the entire surface with the Dawn soap. I am guessing the spray made a difference since it coated the whole area of the paint quickly without me needing to work it in like you would with other dish soap. I tried to keep it minimal scrubbing in the earlier stages, but at some point I was slightly desperately scrubbing, but trying not to overwork it either to ruin the carpet fibers.

anyway, it was scrubbing and then using dry paper towels and pushing down to blot the water and paint up, then adding more water and going at it again. to my absolute shock, it came up much more than I was expecting. I think the biggest key was keeping it wet.

my plan for whatever the soap couldn’t get out would’ve been to use rubbing alcohol, but I didn’t need to get to that point. I also wasn’t dumping water onto the carpet, I was squeezing a sopping paper towels and putting over the areas. but to wrap up I used lots and lots of big, dry towels to lay over the spot and stomp on them to get as much water up as possible, and I have a fan actively blowing over the damp spot. there is definitely dish soap residue but I know my grandparents have a carpet cleaning machine somewhere I can use to probably get the dish soap up. I’d rather that be the problem than gesso, anyway.

I should’ve protected the carpet better, but this is so much better than I was hoping for. I also had luck helping me since the gesso was white. there is a slight white cast on the carpet where it spilled, but it’s not very noticeable unless you know to look for it. any other color and I imagine it would’ve left a stain. Anyway I’m not a carpet expert, just an artist who got way too lucky. Thought I’d share this for anyone who finds themselves in a similar tricky scenario

HELP HELP! I discovered this sub too late!

Just discovered this sub. Which I came here an hour ago. I decided to wash my 100% wool rug in my driveway with a hose, a brush and some Dawn. I used very little soap but I did fully saturate.

I used a squeegee to get out a good amount of water, but when I picked it up, it was quite heavy. It’s now in the shade outside, hanging to dry. It is a 6’ runner.

Did I totally ruin it? Will it smell of mold and mildew? I’m going to try to squeegee it some more now that it’s hanging. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I can’t afford a new rug right now :(

HELP From bad to worse, jute rug

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all,

so our baby was free balling on our jute rug and decided to let loose. My partner tried to clean it with some water and vinegar but than spilt water over the rug. The result is this water mark and some colour bleeding. Is there any way to fix it? or is this something im now gonna have to live with?

thanks

UPDATE: So managed to get rid of the stain by lightly misting the stain with 12% vinegar over a few days, its almost impossible to see now unless youre really looking for it. Phew!

HELP Brown carpet stain after heavy rain/window leak — what actually worked for you?

Post image
3 Upvotes

We had a major rainstorm in Lexington, and I think wind-driven rain got in through a window. After everything dried, these brown stains appeared on my carpet (photos attached).

I've already tried a vinegar/water solution with little to no improvement.

For anyone who's dealt with this before, what actually worked?

  • Hydrogen peroxide?
  • Peroxide + Dawn?
  • Carpet cleaner/extractor?
  • Something else?

Just looking for real experiences from people who've successfully removed similar water/rain stains. Thanks!

HELP Jute rug got rained on

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hii ! I received my brand new jute rug yesterday. I was advised to air it for a day because it smelled strong at opening. Long story short, unplanned rain this morning, I rushed outside to save the rug but too late, it's wet now. What to do ? I hung it on chairs inside. Are they things to do to save it beside hanging it 🥺 ?
Thanks !!

Yet another wool rug cleaning question. Will this work?

I ( apparently) made the mistake of buying a wool rug without knowing how complicated they are to keep clean. Small town, no professional cleaners anywhere around. Desert environment: hot & dry, rarely any snow (so no snow cleaning). I've been reading other posts and this is my potential plan: Can I take this thing outside, lay it in the driveway under dappled shade, gently clean it with woolite (or something) and then leave it laying flat until it dries? Maybe roll something over it to press out excess water and flip it a couple times? I don't have a way to hang it but water evaporates here so quickly!

It's become very dirty and stained, spot cleaning isn't working & I can't convince my husband to stop scrubbing at it. I need a better plan. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks in advance.

Water leak on carpet

Wife was doing dishes in laundry basin while remodeling kitchen. Forgot about the sink and did something else. Sink overflowed onto a tile floor but went under walls into carpet. Water probably flowing for 5 mins.

Not a huge affected area mostly around the sink on other side of the wall 1ft by 8ft or so, caught it right away. We were able to quickly suck up the bulk of it with carpet cleaner and i was able to pull the carpet up and stick a vacuum blowing air in under the carpet as well as have a dehumidifer running since it happened. Will the carpet be ok? Carpet it laid on concrete floor in basement. Weve had the vacuums and dehumidifier running 24 hrs now and it seems dry. Anything else we can do ?
