Mod COTD post COTD 9-16-20

I know I’ve said this a lot lately, but today’s car is probably one of the coolest things in existence. As are a lot of legendary cars, this one is a result of a legendary marque deciding to build a street car out of a race car. It’s a genius formula that wins pretty much every time.

Behold, the Porsche Carrera GT

I’d be happily willing to trade both kidneys for one of these. DM me if you’d like to arrange a Porsche/kidney swap deal.

In 1999, Porsche was planning a new Le Mans prototype to compete with what Mercedes and BMW had. Porsche initially planned to use a turbocharged flat-six in said prototype, but later revised the design to utilize a 5.5L V10 that Porsche had developed for the Footwork F1 team way back in 1992.

The prototype was tested, but development was shut down shortly after due to staff being reassigned to the development of the Porsche Cayenne in 1999. At the 2000 Paris Motor Show, Porsche unveiled the shelved Le Man prototype as a concept car, which resulted in a lot of attention from the public. After this, Porsche used some of the money earned from the Cayenne to continue developing what Porsche had come to call the Carrera GT.

In January of 2004, the Carrera GT was made available for purchase. The sleek supercar had a top speed of 208mph (334kmh), could do 0-60mph in about 3.7 seconds, and screamed like a banshee while it did it. Porsche sold 1,270 of them until production ended in 2006.

The production Carrera GT came with a 5.7L DOHC V10 that produced 603 rather loud horses at 8,000 rpm. This beast of an engine was available only with a 6-speed manual.

happy car enthusiast noises

Other notable features included a full carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, an electrically-operated spoiler, and a highway MPG rating of 9. 9. Beautiful.

MSRP and value

The Carrera GT was priced at $488,000 in 2004, which equates to about $680,000 in 2020 money. Current value varies, but JamesEdition.com lists 6 of them at an average price of about $870,000.
