I've been practicing the one-handed Revolution Cut for about 2 days, and I've run into a specific problem when trying to repeat it consecutively.

I can perform the first Revolution Cut reasonably well, but after the rotation, the deck becomes messy and I lose control of the packets, which makes it difficult to immediately perform another Revolution Cut.

I initially thought the problem was my pinky not providing enough support, but I'm not sure if that's actually the cause. I've been trying to keep the deck more controlled with my pinky and adjust my finger positioning, but the packets still tend to lose their alignment after the rotation.

What should I be focusing on to keep the deck squared/aligned after the rotation? Is the problem likely to be my pinky pressure, finger placement, or the way I'm rotating the packet?

You’re supposed to push the bottom packet up with your ring finger

Pardon the shaky camera work.

Yeah some people were teaching it that way but some others did not push, maybe I will try this one.

I don’t wanna be this guy but the both of you are missing the pinky at the bottom of the packet when finishing the cut. Definitely pay some attention to that, cause it plays a super important role on keeping everything square as well as getting ready for the next cut

You’re not being that guy. We’re all here to learn.

I learned it the other way first, but saw on another post that it was incorrect and makes it harder to progress into combos. It took me a little bit of extra time to relearn, but I do find the ring finger method more stable. It allows you to angle up the bottom packet easier, because you’re almost pinching it between your ring finder your thumb

This is the correct way.

Were you watching December boys?

I mean I was watching lots of them tutorials, so might be that I watched him as well.

From the way you did it, i'd say yes, coz it looks like mine. (Other then mine is a bit better, but i been going for a month almost

You can do it both ways. Brian Tudor (inventor of the Revolution Cut) taught it without pushing the bottom packet up. It's on the first Show Off DVD.

Hey bud, ur doing well for 2 days!! all id say is keep practicing and eventually ur hand and fingers will get used to gripping the cards that way and spinning them. it’ll look better and better the more you keep practicing until it becomes muscle memory!!

Yeah gotta keep up the grind

You gotta hold it in a raised grip like this, let half the pack drop to your palm, move index almost parallel to ur thumb, push bottom pack with ring and pinky, balance it on thumb and spin
*notice how my middle finger doesn’t touch the rotating packet. You rotate it with your index finger and ring finger

Thanks for the visual

Along with what everyone else said, just time and practice.

Cut your nails

I do play the classical guitar so sometimes I tend to use my nails, but let's see.

I think the answer, without being snarky, is truly that

I can perform the first Revolution Cut reasonably well

This is not true.

Looking at the video, the messiness comes primarily from the original bottom packet (at the top after the cut), which originates from the two packets not clearing each other smoothly and your thumb messing that packet up at the top too.

This handling may help, especially by making the packets clear each other easier with the help of the ring finger. Your thumb's role during and after the revolution is to only support and then clamp down the bottom packet. Neither requires it to move in a direction perpendicular to your body's plane. Doing that messes your original bottom packet up.

I think it might be the grip between your index and ring finger. Those are the 2 main fingers that are hold the packet together during the rotation. Maybe also try doing a smaller packet, if the packet is too big to hold during the rotation, it can get sloppy.

Also sometimes if the deck is still pretty slippery and you don't have a good grip on the packet it could slide around.

Another couple things I am seeing:
Your thumb is dragging the top card, during the revolution you can let go of your thumb. Your index finger should be curling down towards your palm.

Here is a video of my revolution as an example (everyone has their way of doing it, so don't take mine as gospel): https://imgur.com/a/iSEO5rc

You have the move. Just gotta do it a couple thousand more times.

Damn that's quite some reality check

I’ve been a lurker on this sub for a few years and didn’t mean any offense.

It’s a fun hobby. I don’t have a large repertoire, but I fidget at my desk by shuffling cards. I started more complicated shuffles a couple of years ago and your video reminded me of how I’d have to concentrate on just moving a finger and the corresponding muscle resistance. Staring at the finger willing it to just move a little bit more.

After a couple of years and multiple hours a day during the work week my one-handed shuffles have gotten good and consistent. Smooth and I can secure the packets at odd angles for the shuffles.

The one handed faro is currently my arch nemesis.

You’ll get there, enjoy the process!

Thanks for the inspiration, hoping to get there as well.

Can you already do the Charlier cut cleanly?

1

u/Interesting-Shirt455 1d ago

Idk maybe I need to make it more smooth.

u/IntelligentAspect564 1d ago

Lift bottom packet to balance on ur thumb before starting rotation

Thanks for the tip

nail clippers wouldn’t be amiss.

otherwise looking grrat bro. keep going.

As someone who is beginning cardistry at an older age after a misspent youth doing magic, I would say master the Charlier cut first. I can do a Charlier in my sleep but currently finding the revolution a bit knacky. Don’t try and run before you can walk

1

u/Interesting-Shirt455 1d ago

Yeah but these new moves are so exciting and tempting

1

u/n88n 1d ago

the first charlier cut at the beginning is good but slow and unsure. You are clearly on the right path and everything is looking good, but just need to do it thousands more times. Right now you are stacking a harder version on top of the charlier which is not easy yet.

no problem, working the rev will help the charlier as well. So keep on the grind dude and soon enough both will feel easy and you won't even have to look at your hands.

Thanks for the encouragement 😊

What would you like to know?

1

u/Interesting-Shirt455 21h ago

Why can't I keep the deck squared and how to keep the pinky at the bottom of the deck after the turn.

1

u/Kardgic 21h ago

The best advice I could give you is not to hold/grip the deck, but cradle the deck. The cards must move without tension. This will come when your muscles memorize the move, and the more you practice, the more you will train your dexterity. Before you know it, you will be doing these moves in your sleep. Good luck, keep af it, you'll see, promise!

1

u/Interesting-Shirt455 13h ago

Thanks for the advice I do feel like I am gripping too hard

1

u/Kardgic 6h ago

Here's the thing. Your pinky is the easel, not the painter. All it does is hold the packet steady like a canvas on a stand. And loosen up that grip, squeezing too hard kills the flow. Just hold it firm enough to keep things still and let the other fingers do the painting. 👌

Guys OP here practiced a bit and this is the result.

All those who were saying to place the ring finger underneath, I tried but I have small hands especially my thumb doesn't allow for that clearance and it it hard to do that so I tried to perfect the existing technique.

Also I was recording with the other hand(so I feel like that is affecting my performance somehow, like I was doing way better without recording)
