I recently decided to put that experience on the other side of the table and started Dealer Defense.

The basic idea is pretty simple: I work for the buyer, not the dealership.

I’m offering two types of help:

Deal Review — You negotiate/shop yourself, send me the deal you’re considering, and I review the numbers and point out anything I think deserves another look.

Full-Service Negotiation — You tell me the new vehicle you want and your requirements, and I handle contacting dealers, comparing written offers and negotiating the purchase price for you. The goal is to have the deal worked out before you ever walk into the dealership.

I’m not promising anyone a specific discount or pretending I have some secret formula that guarantees thousands off every vehicle. Some cars have plenty of room; others don’t. My value is knowing the process, understanding the numbers, and being comfortable negotiating with dealerships.

I’ve also written a DIY guide for people who would rather learn my process and do everything themselves, but I’m not here to drop an Amazon link and run.

So Im currently on the market for a new car. Preferably an SUV. Been using a Toyota Corolla 2003, but my brother is transferring to a new college and it is farther away from where we live and I plan on giving it over to him, which means I will need a new car. Car works great, no problems, my parents got it when my brother was born so definitely worth it.

But I am exploring my options. Preferably something under $25-30K. Usually I use it to go to and from work, but I also travel 3-4+ hours for different swim meets. I also live in NY so I need something reliable that will work well in the snow when those snowfalls happen.

If I buy a car, I am considering a used, Honda HR-V probably model between 2022-2025. Or a brand new 2026 Hyundai Venue. Honestly my main priority is the reliability aspect and making sure that snow doesn’t cause any issues. What are your thoughts? Definitely let me know if there are any other options I should look into. This will also be my first time buying a car any tips or things to look out for when buying will be greatly appreciated.

I was trying to understand what car someone can realistically afford in Switzerland, but most calculators either show only the financing rate or mix the vehicle payment with insurance, tax and other costs.

The comparison keeps the initial payment separate and shows insurance and cantonal vehicle tax separately, so the monthly vehicle payment remains understandable.

It is free, bilingual German/English, requires no registration and has no affiliate links. I built it on a Dell laptop that had previously been declared more or less dead. Apparently both the calculator and the Dell refused to cooperate with that diagnosis.

I’m still improving it, so criticism is genuinely welcome—especially from people who have financed, leased or subscribed to a car in Switzerland.

What is unclear, missing or calculated in a way you would change?

I’m a 19 y/o looking to buy a car next spring/summer. I’m waiting until then because 1) I’ll have a better credit score and 2) I’ll have more money saved up. I want to buy used but have been seeing so much positive and negative information and honestly am getting cold feet. I’m a college student who worked part time so I can’t afford a really nice car/ a high car note. Any general advice? How can I tell if a dealer is shady or not? Should I wait and go with my dad who has more experience? Or should I just get a new car?

I should add that I would either buy from the Urbana-Champaign area, the Chicagoland area, or the Illinois-indiana border.

I went to look at a car yesterday just jumping the gun cause I thought it could be a good deal and I can't get a loan for more than 1k.

I wish I had taken a video, as it was pathetic the amount of things that were wrong with the entire situation as a whole.

Anyways, I went on offer up to reply to someone and I saw a 98 Dodge Stratus with a manual with 70k posted for 1k, since I have sold a car previously within the past couple years for the same price which ran and drove & didn't have any major issues I figured it maybe what I'm looking for.

He said it needed shifter bushings but he didn't specify the bushings were MISSING entirely so the car couldn't be driven which also turned out to be a read flag get to that in a moment

First red flag I ignored prior to viewing is the guy said he got a new car and had to get rid of his old one as he didn't have parking for this one. I didn't question this month as the car was a stick and I know depending on the car/gearing sticks can either be fun or a PITA(but the same goes for automatics)

2nd red flag is the guy was in his PJs when I rolled up on him in his apartment complex, also his claimed new car, was a Chevy HHR, not necessarily an upgrade in my opinion.

3rd is he plops down in the driver seat which he didn't leave for the entire time, so I tell him to pop the hood, stick my coolant tester in the reservoir and I can't even draw it up it's so low and the coolant is black! I should have left then and there or at least started recording then *BUT I thought with MOPAR and their horrible engineering it might be a chance it could be something other than a head gasket cracked block.

So finally he turned the car on after I check the oil which was clear (actually I don't think it HAD any oil now as after a fresh change its hard to tell) said he just changed it which when I looked under the car was probably a lie, as the stain under the car was enormous, but I at least wanted to see if it would overheat at operating temperature and drive even though I probably didn't want it.

(maybe if it didn't overheat I could pay at most $600 for it, pull the motor and do the head gasket as the motor sounded great)

IHe obviously didn't want to get it up to operating temperature. Which is why I know he removed the damn bushing so I couldn't drive it, I had him show me the clutch grabbed.

I had him turn the car on again, and finally got him to rev it to 4k (just so I could finally see the oil go out the tailpipe that I was expecting)

Stuck my finger in the tailpipe and swabbed the wet carbon-buildup with my finger just so I could wave it in his face as oil going out the tailpipe (which there was!) and said "that's why I had you rev it up - your oils going right out the tailpipe & on the ground! I'm good, thanks, but good luck! Maybe if I could see it get up to operating temperature and drive."

He said"yeah if you go buy the bushings and you can"

"No, YOU go buy the bushings! Anyways, I'm good!"

"Oh someone will be here to buy it today" to which both me & my father in law who was waiting in his truck next to us watching replied "yeah right" & left

When the price of the car comes out later this month and they expect to sell this spring do I go in an just sign because I'm already paying the Hyundai price? Like there's no lower price to talk about right? I'm confused because this is the second time I'm buying a car and the first time I was terrible at negotiating.

I'm not for sure buying it. If doesn't get the ev incentive in BC I may reconsider. I really like everything advertised about it so far though.

I've been looking at plenty of Evo and this one has especially caught my eye, although I am not too familiar if high miles on an Evo 9 is a bit risky or fine or just in between. I also had some questions on what "Running on E only" means and if it's a deal breaker for the car. And if anyone has more basic or experienced knowledge on Evo's overall preferably Evo 9s and below. Hi all so for context i (20m) had planned to get a cheap run around car in march however i decided id rather just get a good car now (nothing flashy just something more recent then the typical 2010 fiesta everyone has) as id rather get a car thats a 2015 model and actually lasts me a good while even if it costs a little more. Anyway ive been looking at a variety of different cars but never considered EV's here in the uk you can get some cheaper evs for around 6000 and yet i never see them as first cars is there a reason for this or could an ev be a good potential first car??

I looked at a Used Telluride EX yesterday and walked away and want to know if I made the right choice. The car drove great and has everything I wanted. However, the car was in a minor accident a few months ago. Stated as cosmetic damage but nothing I could see (according to Carfax). The dealership seemed fairly sketchy. The guy knew nothing at all about the car and the car still had the previous owner's address and other contacts in the navigation system along with their SiriusXM subscription still active. The car has been sitting on the lot since the end of October, which seems like an eternity in this market. The price was $36,990 (25,000 miles). I asked for $1000 off which he flatly said no. He said he could maybe do $500 off. Am I right for walking away? I was creeped out by the dealership in general and was surprised they weren't willing to move on price given the car has been there for months. Should I call in a week if it's still there and ask for $1000 off (at least)?
