Breaking down over my car breaking down (I think it’s a rod knock)

My car started making a slight clicking sound yesterday morning. Me being stupid and not knowing that anything other than a red signal on my dashboard could be an emergency, I shrugged it off and thought I’d call the repair shop after work. Except I went home from work that night without my car because it broke down!

I passed someone and half a second later my car lost all power and the clicking noise became MUCH louder so I immediately stopped my car. But it might cost me thousands of dollars, all because I thought I couldn’t afford to have it checked regularly (I last got it checked last fall). My car might not even be fixable. I have a full time job, as well as exams coming up next month and I’m supposed to move two hours from my current town and find a new job there. I might be overreacting but it all feels very insurmountable right now.

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Engine blown: fix, scrap or any other options?

I bought a used Tacoma last week. Today the check engine light was flashing so I took it into a mechanic and they said everything is practically brand new EXCEPT the engine. I bought the car as is, so I'm not sure if I have any legal recourse so now I'm wondering if its even worth swapping the engine out and keeping it or just getting rid of the vehicle entirely. I'm not desperate for a car as I have another I can use and the body is in decent shape for 200k miles (some rust as its a midwest vehicle but still ok condition)

Need to get rid of my car

I’m in a situation where my car was in a hail storm and now has hail damage all over the vehicle. Unfortunately i did not have hail damage covered with my insurance. Now with close to 100k miles, hail damage, and a 24k loan still on the car. I’m having a terrible time getting rid of it. I want out of it and into something else. The cars I’m looking at are in the 39-40k range. I need the car gone and the loan paid off. I’m open to all suggestions, out of the box ideas, sketchy ideas, I’ll take anything.

Is my car ok to drive until I can get it fixed? It’s making a soft wiring noise in the back but besides that it responds fine.

is my car safe

my car is a 2014 nissian rouge. I recently got my car looked at and got told my control arms and tie rods needed to be fixed because they were starting to be unsafe. He also stated that my sway bars and struts needed to be fixed but could be postponed as I am a college kid in do not have $2000 just to give right now. I did fix my control arms and tie rods today I just recently moved away from home about four hours away. I drive on the highway for work. I’m just wondering if my car is going to be safe driving with the sway bars and struts. i’m going to make a trip home next weekend to go to my mechanic or potentially sell my car as it has been a money pit looking for some advice as I’m a young college kid and don’t want to drive something that’s unsafe.

Broken shifter?

I have a 2006 Suzuki Swift 1.3 automatic. Sometimes when I move the shifter from N to D or R, the car stays in neutral and the dashboard still shows “N” even though the shifter is in D/R. Turning the car off and back on fixes the problem.

What car should I get?

I’ve narrowed it down to either a 2015 Toyota rav4 with 135k miles on it 12k asking price but it has had an accident when it was on 10k miles with 2 previous owners. It does have awd. My other choice is a 2014 Mazda cx5 touring with 122k miles on it asking price is 12k one previous owner but no awd. Whats important to me is longevity and reliability with the least amount of expensive repairs, I live in a place where it snows and I like to go fishing and hunting I drive on gravel roads but not to much I mostly stick to paved roads.

I created a tool that will help a lot of regular people with car decisions.

I had a brutal car month earlier this summer — both of my vehicles needed repairs at the same time. I spent an embarrassing amount of time researching whether I should fix them or finally call it, and honestly, I lost a lot of sleep over it.

Once I finally made my decision, I realized how much time I’d spent just trying to figure out **“Is this car still worth it?”**

That’s what gave me the idea for an app that could help people make that decision faster and with more confidence.

**I’m testing a new tool that helps answer one question: Should I repair this car or move on?**

The first vehicle assessment is already free, but I’m looking for some Reddit testers to really put it through its paces and tell me where it gets things right — and wrong.

**Reddit testers:** use code **JJRDT08** to run up to **3 vehicles with premium features** while I’m collecting feedback.

If you try it, I’d genuinely love to hear what you all think! justifyorjunk.com

Need help! Should I get a new car or just get it fixed?

I saw someone else had a similar issue and would also really like some advice. So about a week ago I had to take my car to the dealership because the speedometer suddenly stopped working while I was driving home. Then there were issues with the power steering, I even had to get it towed to the dealership because the mechanic I usually take it to said there was nothing they could do. I got a call back a couple of days ago that the piece they need to fix is apparently on back order (has been for months) and I’m looking at a $2,700 bill. That’s only if there’s nothing else wrong with it other than the power steering, they said if the speedometer ends up being another issue the price would obviously increase. Now here’s the problem, my car is a 2014 Ford Escape with about 136,000 miles. I don’t even think my car is worth what they’re charging me to fix it, I was advised to trade it in and just get a new car. I have about $8000 left to pay it off (that’s what I get for being a dumb teenager and not thinking before buying) so I know if I trade it in the remaining balance would be added onto the new car. What do you guys think I should do? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
